William (Bill) Gene Bennett was born November 23, 1947, in Mitchell, SD. He grew up in Alexandria, SD, with his sister, Linda, and brother, Barry. They were raised by their mother, Cecelia Bennett.

Bill was united in marriage to Constance (Connie) Jean Zens on June 4, 1966. They were blessed with three children, Wanda, John, and Brenda. They lived in Farmer, Lyons, NE, and Alexandria until they retired to Mitchell.

Bill was a hard worker and held many different jobs throughout his life. He worked at Spencer Quarry, Farmer School, Mitchell Rendering, City of Alexandria, and retired from Toshiba America.

Bill was a survivor who battled cancer in 1988 and had quadruple bypass surgery in 1999. He never let it bring him down, and lived his life to the fullest after those experiences.

Bill was a prankster who loved to shoot fireworks and taught his grandkids the finer points of shooting them. He also had a favorite prank involving dentures. After moving to Mitchell, he found new friends and could be found at a number of coffee groups or playing cards. He frequently made the drive to Alex to visit old friends. The candy jar was always full of treats for the grandkids and great-grandkids. He always had a smile and was welcoming to everyone.

Bill is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Wanda Still, John (Deanna) Bennett, and Brenda (Dan) Rew; grandchildren: Alex (Megan) Bennett, Zachary (Madie) Bennett, Ellie (Joe) Prohaska, Nick Bennett, and Isaac (Mandy) Rew; great-grandchildren, Mac and Mazie Bennett, and Clara Prohaska; siblings, Linda Hanna and Barry Bennett; in-laws, Carol (Skip) Mayhew, Gene (Sandy) Zens, Jerry (Debra) Zens, Jim (Jeanette) Zens, Julie (Kevin) Doorn, and many nieces and nephews who held a very special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Cecelia; in-laws, Raymond and Anna Marie Zens; son-in-law, Glen Still; sister-in-law, Tina Bennett; and brother-in-law, Donnie Hanna.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.

Worked with Bill at Toshiba for many years. Since Bill retired from Toshiba I visited with Bill and Connie at Sunday breakfast many times. My father in law ( Bud KOSTER) and Bill had the same type of cancer at the same time. So Bill was always a special person in our lives. I’m so thankful for the time we worked together. So sorry for your loss. God be with you Bill.
