Obituary

Timothy “Chip” Chipley, 61, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Modesto, CA. A Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, October 11, from 10-11:30 AM with a prayer service at 11:30 AM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Timothy Craig Chipley, known to many of those close to him as “Chip,” was born in Redding, California on September 27th, 1962, to William “Dub” Curtis Chipley Sr. and Annie Simpson. He lived in Northern California throughout his childhood with two older brothers, Curtis and Dennis Chipley.

Tim graduated from Central Valley High School in 1981 and joined the United States Air Force later that year, where he served as an aircraft mechanic for just short of a decade. During his time in the Air Force, he was able to travel the world, being stationed in various places such as Alaska, Korea, Florida, and Rapid City, South Dakota.

It was while he was stationed in Rapid City in 1985 that he met Laurianne Styles-Wantoch, who would later become his wife. The two were married on July 17th, 1993, in Mitchell, SD, and together over the course of their marriage, raised three daughters, Kayla, Taysha, and Bryanna. They also shared seven grandchildren from their two oldest daughters, Lauryn, Lily, and Lexa Lux, and Tayla, Taitlyn, Tayvalin, and Maverick Wantoch.

While in Mitchell, Tim worked in various welding and construction jobs at companies such as Dakota Pump, Twin City Fan, Hendrickson Turner, and finally Palace Builders, where he spent most of his career. He also managed the local American Legion Café, working alongside friends, his brother-in-law Michael, and youngest daughter Bryanna, for a short period of time before retiring in 2021. At this time, he and his girlfriend Vernette Derdall moved out of Mitchell together. The two spent the last 2 years traveling the Western United States: visiting various national parks, sightseeing, and visiting friends and family, before settling in Modesto, CA.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Chipley.

I will miss your humor, your laugh and the way you called me butt head. We laughed and cried together. The best friend, roommate, commrad anyone could ask for. We have always been there for each other. You called me Sis and I called you Brother when you weren't calling me butt head. Love you. Your beautiful heart will be greatly missed. ♥️
