Tanner Grove
Dates
February 2, 1989 - May 20, 2025Obituary
Tanner Grove, 36, of Chicago, IL, formerly of Mitchell, SD, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2025. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Tanner Mark Grove was born February 2, 1989, in Dickinson, ND to Mark and Jackie, and sister Megan. In 1990, his family moved to Bowbells, ND where they welcomed twin sisters, Molly and Taylor. It was there he met his best friend Branden, with whom he loved exploring their small town and attending grade school.
In 1998, the family relocated to Mitchell, SD, where he participated in all sports, but he particularly loved baseball, which became a lifelong passion. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 2007 and attended University of Sioux Falls for two years. During this time of searching for his life’s calling, he worked a variety of jobs and briefly attended NDSU. Eventually, he returned to South Dakota to work on the family farm before deciding to complete his college degree at St Cloud State University in Minnesota.
While studying, Tanner also worked at Viking Coca-Cola in St Cloud, a job he loved for the work as well as the friendships he built. In 2024, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He chose to start his career in Chicago, a city he had dreamed of living in.
Despite his many talents and accomplishments, Tanner battled depression and anxiety. He was genuinely happy when he was wrestling with his nephews, Bennett and Brooks, and spending time with his nieces, Parker, Blair, Quinn, and Hattie, and young cousins, Grace, Lily, and Henry. He adored them and the feeling was mutual.
He was a son, brother, and uncle who was far more than his struggles. He had a deep love of music and was a talented guitar player. He was a voracious reader of WWII history, had a passion for good food, and lake days jet skiing and boating to Dairy Queen. Tanner was a devoted fan of all Chicago sports, especially the White Sox.

Tanner is survived by his mother, Jacqueline (Chet) Edinger; father, Mark (Sharilyn) Grove; sister, Megan and her fiancé, Matt Ellens; sister, Molly (Matt) McManus and nieces Parker, Blair and Hattie; sister, Taylor (Blake) Turbak, and nephews Bennett, Brooks, and niece Quinn; and special friend, Amanda Wittenberg.

Bryce and Tanner were great friends at Mitchell High School.
I remember the “prom” and we cooked for the bunch.
Bryce and Tanner would eat at the bar the food was great.
It’s a job being a Mom never ending for us Jackie.
As a family take care of one another. Tanner would want all of you to celebrate his life and not to be sad.
