Obituary

Steven Berg, 58, of Emery, SD, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 9, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. Burial will be at the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Emery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at the Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Steven Leonard Berg was born on October 2, 1967, to Leonard and Joan (Schulte) Berg in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on a farm south of Emery and graduated from Emery High School in 1985. He then went on to attend Mitchell Technical Institute for 2 years for electronics.

Steve married Susan (Jones) in 1990, after only a few months of dating. They were blessed with 3 children, Brandon and twins Lucas and Lindsey.

Early on, he farmed with his dad, mostly fixing what his dad messed up. He started working for Continental Grain, Cargill, and then Mitchell Iron and Supply. He worked in the fertilizer department for Cargill, which was later acquired by CPS, then Nutrien. He went on to become the location manager of the CHS in Ethan. For the last several years, he worked for 1st Manufacturing, which allowed him to do what he loved most: working on the farm. He enjoyed working the fields with his brother during the last few years of his life.

Steve loved the BEE Seahawks football team (where he both played for them in high school as well as watched his sons play for them), the Emery Eagles, BEE Huskies, Minnesota Vikings, Twins, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He raised hogs and later cattle. Raising cattle with his daughter gave him immense joy. He was an Emery Volunteer Firefighter and a lifetime member of St. Martin Catholic Church, where he had served both as a lector and usher.

Steve was a caretaker. He worked long hours for many years, but he would be there for others at the drop of a hat. He never believed he needed acknowledgment and often selflessly helped others.

Steve is survived by his wife; children, Brandon (Shayla), Lucas (JoJo) and Lindsey (Lucas Henry); grandchild, Jonah Steven Berg; siblings, Linda (Greg Cuomo) Nagel, Kevin (Emily) Berg and Gretchen Berg; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joan and Leonard Berg; father-in-law, Darrell Jones; uncles and cousin

Sad to hear of Steves passing. Toughts and prayers to his family.I met Steve in 1986 while we were both attending Mitchell Vo Tech. Also saw him when delivering grain to the elevator or when he sold his cattle at sale barn, Always a great guy to be around or helpful if you needed it, RIP my friend.
