Obituary

Shirley Magstadt, 87, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, October 1, 2026, at her home under hospice care. Visitation will be Monday, October 5, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. A private burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Shirley Ann Magstadt, known to many as Grandma Shirley, will be remembered for her quick wit, adventurous spirit, and her incredible ability to make memories wherever she went. Shirley was born to Marion and Beulah Wendelboe on September 22, 1939.

Shirley was the kind of woman who never believed that age should keep her from having fun. She had a wonderful willingness to join in on the craziness with her family and friends, often acting as though she were 20 years old again. Her sense of humor and ability to laugh at herself made her someone people loved being around.

She was known for many things, including her legendary Russian tea parties, complete with spray cheese and her creative knowledge of how to make tea from Tang and instant tea. She also had a signature shade of lipstick, which was never to be forgotten.

Shirley was never afraid to say exactly what she thought, and her family will forever cherish the comments, stories, and unforgettable moments she gave them.

Those who knew Shirley will remember her as someone who could turn an ordinary day into a story worth telling. Whether she was joining in on an adventure, sharing a laugh, or giving someone that look and saying, “No, Dennis...that’s not the way it went,” she always left an impression.

Above all, Shirley loved her family and the time she spent with them. She was a devoted mother to two children, who gave her 13 grandchildren, three bonus grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She poured her heart into her family, always finding joy in the next generation and the many milestones they celebrated together.

Shirley also had a special love for sewing for others. She enjoyed quilting and making pot holders, often giving her handmade creations to family and friends. It was just one more way she showed her love and thoughtfulness to those around her.

Shirley leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, love, and memories that will never be forgotten.

I was given pot holders that Shirley made. I still use them and remember the kind gift. She also gave me a Ty breast cancer bear when I was at a very low part of my life having breast cancer for the 2nd time. She let me know someone cared. I will always remember her kindness. I'm sure you all have so many fond memories, she was very special.

What a sweet lady. She asked me for a piece of my mother's material when my mom died. Shirley made a quilt block to put in my President's quilt, as a reminder of my mother. RIP Shirley.
