Sara Peta, 72, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, November 7, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, November 26, at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Sara Jane Peta was born August 17, 1953, to Anton and LaVera (Cunningham) Peta in Mitchell, SD. Sara graduated from Mitchell High School.

Sara married Douglas Hanson in July 1971. To this union, a son, Jeffrey “Gov” Hanson was born. Later on, they decided to have more children and adopted two beautiful daughters, Kari Ann and Jamie Kay. Doug and Sara later divorced but remained good friends.

Sara held numerous jobs in Mitchell. She was a big supporter of the Salvation Army, where she worked as a case worker; however, her most important roles were those of mother and grandmother.

Sara loved crocheting, playing pinochle, watching old western movies, and the color hot pink.

Left to cherish Sara’s memories are her children; Jeffrey “Gov” (Sherri) Hanson, Kari (Clint) Hall, and Jamie Hanson; siblings, Sheila (Dennis) Paulus, Sharon Stearns, and Larry Peta; grandchildren, Ashlee and Dean Hanson, Shaylee Hanson, Haidlee Hanson-Sinkie, Beau and Jeremiah Cleveland, and Michael and Max Hall; very special friend, Jr. Sonne; her dog, Charlie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and LaVera Peta; sister, Shirley Tietz; sister-in-law, Carol Peta; brothers-in-law, Ivan Stearns and Earl Tietz; nephews, Brad Paulus and Ron Tietz; and niece, Betty Jo Tietz.

How very sad to read of Sara's passing. What a sweet, dear, kind neighbor in Mt. Vernon. We will cherish the great memories we had together as friends. May God grant peace & comfort to those who loved her.

She was the best Grandmother I could have asked for, she was always there when I needed her the most. When I heard she had passed I broke down into tears because she was my cornerstone, my rock, my best friend, my mother when I was little. She will always be my number one grandmother, I wish she could have stayed a little longer so she could see my graduation but God had other plans for her. She is one of gods angels now, and she is no longer in pain. You will be sincerely missed by all of us, I hope you are having fun in heaven. Love you forever grandma.

PETA family,
So sorry to hear of Sarah’s passing. We were class mates. She was such a nice person. I ran into her while we were at Sunshine. She helped us out and we did some catch up then. She will be dearly missed. A very kind sole.
