Obituary

Ryan Feterl, 52, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Visitation will be Saturday, October 26, from 3-5:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell.

Ryan Christopher Feterl was born in Minneapolis, MN on February 4, 1972. He moved with his family to Pierre, SD, then to Mitchell, SD, where he graduated from high school in 1991.

Ryan worked as a corrections officer for the State of South Dakota until he retired. Although his tall build matched the role of a corrections officer, those who knew him felt that translated more to his famous big bear hugs. After retiring, he worked at the Brandon Golf Course, the Wild Oak Golf Course, and most recently at Runnings in Mitchell.

Ryan had many special people in his life including family, friends, and one injury-prone but very loyal dog Carter (C-boy). He loved playing golf, cheering on the Vikings, and watching college football.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Feterl of Mitchell; sister, Carmen Bradbury of Maple Grove, MN with nephew, Zach and niece, Abby; and sister and brother-in-law, Micki and Greg McCurry of Victoria, MN with nieces, Hannah, Bennet, and Charlotte. He has many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who all cherished his big smile and big heart.

So sorry to get the news that Ryan passed away. Ryan worked for us at Rob's Short Stop. But Ryan was so much than an employee. Getting a hug from him was like getting a hug from a big teddy bear. We remember him as someone special. We pray that he rests in peace.

In my 34 years of teaching, some students stand out in my mind. Ryan was one of those who hold a special place in my heart. I loved seeing that big guy saunter into my classroom every day with his huge smile. He lit up the room and made my day! My heart breaks for his family. In his brief time with us, I'm sure he positively touched many lives, and we are all the better for the impact he made. I will forever remember his grin and gentle teasing. He truly left an impression on me. Fly high, Ryan. You were loved and will be missed.

I sent Ryan a message the other day, asking if we could come to visit him. I wish we had gone sooner. We should never put off the important things in life. Ryan spent a lot of time .....good times....in our life. Loved that big teddy bear! I am so sorry for your loss.
