Obituary

Ruth Guymon, 88, of Chamberlain, SD, died Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Sanford Chamberlain Long Term Care in Chamberlain. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, August 24, at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Ruth Ann Dahl was born on October 11, 1937, to Winnie and Algot Dahl in Mitchell, SD. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1955. She was united in marriage to Earl Allen Guymon on July 7, 1957, in Mitchell, SD. After marriage, she became a homemaker and a mother to five children.

After the children grew up, she furthered her education at Huron College (1984–1985). She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Computer Science, Magna Cum Laude, from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1988, a wonderful accomplishment that her family was very proud of.

She worked as a library assistant at Huron High School and Huron College (1984–1985), and as a library assistant and weekend head supervisor at DWU Layne Library (1985–1988). From 1989 until her retirement in 2002, she served as a full-time and evening computer science instructor at Mitchell Technical Institute. Ruth loved teaching and working with her students, and was honored with the MTI Teacher of the Year Award for 1991–1992.

As a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, Ruth served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and active member and leader in the women’s circle. She devoted six years as a Cub Scout Leader and was involved in numerous professional and honor organizations, including MATE (Mitchell Area Technical Educators) as an officer and member, ITC, AAUW, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Gamma Mu.

Ruth was an avid baker, seamstress, and crafter. One of her biggest joys in life was making things for those she loved, especially food like her fantastic scrambled eggs or one of her many dessert breads. Throughout her childhood, Ruth often made their clothing, toys, and quilts. After her children were grown, she continued the tradition by making scrapbooks, blankets, and desserts for the seven grandchildren, especially her delicious strawberry rhubarb crisp and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Most visits to the Guymon house would include a homemade dessert and card games around the table. She shared a love for pinochle and three thirteen with her late husband and family.

Ruth is survived by her children, Craig (Ronette) Guymon of Yankton, SD, Lance (Lori) Guymon of Ft. Collins, CO, Kirk (Lori) Guymon of Rapid City, SD, Shawn (Jeannie) Guymon of New Ulm, MN, Heidi (Jeff) Brosz of Pierre, SD; grandchildren, Aaron Charlson, Blake Guymon, Nate Guymon, Andy Guymon, Seth Guymon, Jinnie Guymon, and Max Brosz; great-grandchildren, Brooks and Ariana Jo; brother-in-law, Oscar Thompson of Letcher, SD; and sister-in-law, Joyce Cunningham of Kenosha, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, after 67-years of marriage; parents Algot and Winnie; sister, Doris Thompson; brothers Robert Rothlisberger and Orland Rothlisberger; sisters-in-law, Louise (Roger) Eddy and Jo (Orland) Rothlisberger; brothers-in-law, Roger Eddy, Ken Cunningham, and LTC Darrell Hanson.

We will always remember Ruth sharing her knitting craft with us when they lived in Aberdeen. She knitted a darling hooded sweater for our first born son. Sympathy to all of the family

Aunt Ruth, you were always a light. One of my favorite teachers to see at Tech! Oh man, I looked forward to your rhubarb crisp when we would have family gatherings. That was soooo good. You will be missed.
