Obituary

Roy Johnson, 69, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD after a serious illness. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 11, at RiverTree Church in Mitchell. The burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell at a later date. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Roy Dean Johnson was born May 23, 1955, to Russell and Norma (Peshek) Johnson in Wagner, SD. He married Roberta Jo “Bobbi” Naser on May 29, 1981. Roy and Bobbi have made Mitchell their home for the past 43 years.

Roy’s dearest memory was coaching his kids in soccer and baseball, then watching his kids and grandkids play their favorite activities and going on to be their #1 fan. Roy enjoyed golfing, hunting, gardening, and canning his ‘hot’ salsa and ‘spicy’ pickles. He loved spending time with friends and family, especially his wife.

A special place to Roy was the Panama Canal, where he traversed through three times during his Naval Career. He was able to experience a portion of the Rain Forest. He also crossed the Equator and International Date Line at the same time making him a golden shellback. Roy served a total of 28 years between the U.S. Navy and Army National Guard.

Roy’s favorite scripture was John 3, the story of Nicodemus. One valued lesson Roy lived by was “Don’t burn bridges – you may need to cross them again.”

Roy is survived by his wife, Bobbi of Mitchell; three children, Andrew (Ashley) Johnson of Mitchell, Leslie (Timothy) Miller of Brandon, Philip (Amanda) Johnson of Emery; nine grandchildren: Emett, Eli, Ella Johnson; Colter, Derringer, Barrett Johnson; Brayden, Reagan, Adelyn Miller; two sisters, Sherry Barns and Gail Myers; and one brother, Jerry Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Norma Johnson, and a brother, Allen Johnson

I had the privilege of working with Roy for almost 15 years. There was never a dull moment with Roy which was just one of the many joys of working with him. We all learned alot from that man. He could troubleshoot electronics like no one I've ever seen. Beyond just a working relationship, he was just an all around great man. Always personable and kind. My sympathies to you Bobbi and Family. Heaven gained great one....
