Rose Elaine Anderson was born June 5, 1932, to James and Amalia (Schindler) Bukacek in Reliance, SD. She is a 1950 graduate of Reliance High School. Raised on a farm in rural South Dakota and the oldest of four children, Rose often spoke of walking through the farmyard gathering corn cobs to feed the wood burning stove at home. After high school, Rose attended Presentation School of Nursing in Aberdeen, SD. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mitchell, graduating in 1953 as a registered nurse. She enjoyed working in the Pediatric department of the hospital and the experience of rotating through other departments learning new things. Rose later worked at the Mabee Eye Clinic in Mitchell for 11 years.

While in nursing school, Rose was introduced to Wm Lee Anderson, a brother of her roommate Leona. After Lee’s return from military service in Germany, Lee and Rose were married on May 4, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Reliance. From this union, they had two children, Bradley and Brenda. Together, they raised registered Angus cattle and lived on a farm near Mitchell. She was a member of the local chapter of the women’s group CowBelles and participated in promoting family and social relations through cattle growers. Rose was also a member of The Elks and Moose Lodge of Mitchell, Catholic Daughters. A person of faith, Rose participated in many bible studies and often held a rosary in her hands.

In March of 1982, Lee and Rose began a new chapter in life and moved to Spearfish, South Dakota in the northern Black Hills. They were active members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where they formed a community of new friends and neighbors. Exploring the area brought new experiences like drives through Spearfish Canyon, church cookouts and even square-dancing lessons. They enjoyed cabin life, the hills in their backyard and buffalo across the road. In 2022, they returned to Mitchell from the Black Hills to be closer to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rose is survived by her husband of 68 years, Lee Anderson; son, Brad (Roxanne) Anderson of Omaha, NE; daughter, Brenda (Vince) Boddicker of Mitchell, SD; brother, Francis (Wanda) Bukacek of Greenville, SC; sister, Diane Bindenagel of Aberdeen, SD; sister-in-law, Connie Bukacek of Reliance, SD; five grandchildren: Jason Boddicker, Sioux Falls, SD, Scott Anderson, Henderson, NV, Caroline (Nevin) Kotera, Omaha, NE, Chelsea (Kyle) Lambert, Rapid City, SD, and Jillian (Matt) Moore, Omaha, NE; step grandson, Billy (Brandy) Boddicker, Parkston, SD; great-grandchildren, Maddox and Jesse Moore, William Kotera, and Olivia Lambert.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Amalia Bukacek; brother, Jerome Bukacek; infant brother; brother-in-law, Joel Bindenagel; step great-granddaughter, Arianna Boddicker; and step great-grandson, Teddy Boddicker.
