Obituary

Rosalie Ost, 82, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 6, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Rosalie Ost was born at home in Walnut, IA, on May 23, 1943, to Alvin and Bernice (Getz) Fideler.  The family moved to Delmont, SD, in 1946 and then to Armour, SD, in 1953, where she completed her 10th-grade year in high school. In 1960, the family relocated to Mitchell, SD, where Rosalie began working at the Methodist Hospital at the age of 16 as a tray girl in the cafeteria, eventually advancing to food service supervisor.  Her career includes many positions within the food service industry, highlighted by her work for various businesses, including The Village Bowl, The Townhouse Cafe, Randalls’ Deli, and Coburn’s Deli, before she retired from Pirogues Catering in 2015.  She enjoyed cooking and was a very hard worker. Customers often requested her soups.

Rosalie married Ronald Ost in 1968 and had one child, daughter Donna Jean. They divorced in 1975. She never remarried.

Rose enjoyed gardening, canning, and baking as she would share her harvest and baked goodies with friends and family. She especially loved her tomato plants and always spoke about them every Summer. She loved listening to music and had a healthy obsession with Elvis.

Rosalie is survived by her daughter, Donna (Lucas) Gue, and granddaughter Katelyn Bernice of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Geraldine (Alvin) Kisely of Wagner, SD, and Judy Bierle of Mitchell, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and significant other, Dennis Machovsky, after fighting a long, hard battle with her health, and now she is at rest.

I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to know Rose. She was a quiet person but enjoyed life. I always enjoyed our visits. She reminded me of my Aunt Ruth and I often called her Ruth rather than Rose. My sympathy to all the family and friends. She fought a good fight.
