Obituary

Richard Meier, 92, of White Lake, SD, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake with family by his side. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, July 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. Burial will be at White Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 28, from 12-2:00 PM at the church with a 1:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Richard August Meier was born on January 13, 1932, on a farm in Brule County, east of Kimball, SD.  Richard was the 5th of 7 children born to Fred F. and Maude (Maurer) Meier.

He was baptized February 7, 1932, in Kimball Lutheran Church by Pastor Hugo Beyer. The family moved to a farm southeast of White Lake, SD when Richard was two years old. The family then attended Crystal Lake Lutheran Church. Richard attended country school and had wonderful teachers there, he even won the county spelling contest. In 1942, the family moved to a farm northwest of White Lake as his father purchased their first farm. In 1946, Richard was in a car accident and sustained a severe injury to his leg and was hospitalized for a long time. This injury handicapped him through his teen years, and he was unable to serve in the armed forces. He helped his father on the farm as his brothers were in the army.

In 1954, he purchased his own farm northwest of White Lake, where he resided until February 2024. On February 18, 1955, he married Bertha Glayn Hemeyer in Stickney, SD. Three children were born to this union, Glenn, Miriam, and Alan.

Richard was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served in various church roles. During the years, he was active in Super Pig and card clubs. He also served as a long-time board member of Aurora-Brule Nursing Home. Richard and Glayn always enjoyed gathering the family for time together since their kids and grandkids are spread across the country.

He is survived by his children, Glenn (Pat) Meier of Prince Frederick, MD, Miriam (Steve) Dexter of Cypress, TX, and Alan (Lori) Meier of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Gregory Meier, Christopher Meier, Julie Spalding, Sarah Lauricio, Rachel Woolsey, Adrienne Mann, Alexander Meier, Allison Meier, and Sophia Meier; four great-grandsons, nieces and nephews, and sisters-in-law, Florence Meier and Arlene Hanten.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Glayn; his parents; brothers, Ralph Meier, Ted Meier, Frederick Meier, and Billy Meier; and sisters, Loretta Glissendorf and Florence Tingle.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Richard’s memory to White Lake Senior Citizens or the White Lake Cemetery.

Uncle Richard was a very successful farmer and together with Aunt Glayn raised a great family! He and my Dad helped each most days for years and they were a perfect match! Amazed how their disagreents ended in great agreements and accomplishments, hundreds of animals raised and tons of food for America! Proud of you!! Enjoy your piece of heaven!

Uncle Richard is definitely a legend. He was so good to us. He was a worker, knew how to make it work, and was a great soul., Can't wait to talk to him by St. Peter. Love you Richard.
