Obituary

Rev. Dr. Howard Hart, 92, of Corsica, SD, formerly of Mitchell, SD, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Douglas County Memorial Hospital in Armour. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 17, at Grace Reformed Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Howard Hart was born August 1, 1933, in Fall River, Mass, to Ernest and Minnie (Cross) Hart. He attended elementary and high school in Fall River. He later graduated from Barrington College, RI, receiving a BA in Philosophy. In 1961, he received B.D. and M.Div. degrees from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. At North American Baptist Seminary in 1968 and 1969, he had specialized training in Christian Education. He also later received a Doctor of Divinity Degree.

Howard was ordained to the Christian ministry in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church on March 28, 1962, in Bellmawr, N.J. He served OP churches in Bellmawr, N.J., and Bridgewater, SD, from 1961 to 1969. In 1969, he joined the RCUS and served RCUS churches in Eureka, SD, and Sutton, NE from 1969 to 1982. The RCUS sent him as Missionary at Large in Cincinnati, OH, from 1982 to 1985. While in Cincinnati, he served Faith Presbyterian Church from 1985 to 1986 as interim pastor. Rev. Hart served RCUS churches in Garner, IA, and Lincoln, NE, from 1986 to 1998. He retired from the active ministry in 1998 and moved to Mitchell, SD.

From 1999 to 2005, he was a writer for the RCUS and helped produce 1000 Sunday School lessons. During this time, he was also the Administrator of the Reformed Resource Center. He served various area churches by filling the pulpit for Sunday worship. Dr. Hart's real passion was teaching the Bible. He fulfilled this by teaching at the Mitchell Christian High School from 2004 to 2010. He loved his students, and they loved him. He was employed by the Prehistoric Indian Village in the summers as a tour host from 2001 to 2007.

Howard served in the National Guard from 1949 to 1958 and served in Korea. He was united in marriage to Barbara Monson on June 14, 1958. To this union was born Deborah (Terry) Van Zee of New Holland, SD. Howard has two grandchildren: Benjamin and Daniel Van Zee, and two great-grandchildren, Eli & Kinsley.

Rev. Hart found a great deal of joy in meditating on the Persons of the Holy Trinity, teaching the Gospel and the Love of Jesus in the classroom. His lectures in Church, History, Philosophy, and Apologetics were all based on Jesus, The Christ. His love for the folks in his congregations and the RCUS was only surpassed by his love for his wife Barbara, his daughter Debby, and his faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in August of 2021.

Debby, it is a true blessing to know that we will see Dad and dear friend again in eternal glory. It was an honor to call Rev Horward , and you a like as friends in our young years in Sutton, our journeys to church camp at Aberdeen along with many times at other RCUS function. Howrard was a true soldier of the faith and the morsels he fed us of the scriptures were always presented as honey and so easily digested. The memories are fond and many of both him and you. For although a time for mourning, yet again a time for joy is also at hand !

I have many happy memories of Rev. Hart. He was such a dear friend to my father, right up until my father passed last year. I know there must have been a joyful reunion for those dear friends in heaven. Please accept condolences from the Treick family, Debby. Your father was my “kindred spirit”.

I was privileged to be in pastor harts class in high school from 9th to 12th grade. He was a Godly example of Christ and His love. Being patient to all who were in His Bible class. He'll be missed but we should celebrate his commitment to Christ.

I had the honor of working at MCS and the Indian Village with him. Never a day where he wasn’t encouraging or without a smile on his face. I just picture him soaking up all heaven has to offer right now!

Rev Hart came right out of Westminster Seminary to our church in Bellmawr, New Jersey. I was a teenager at the time. My mother was very ill and my father was never home. Mr. Hart spent many hours talking to me and helping me. I always told him that he was my second favorite pastor. I’ll let you guess who my favorite is.

Reverend Hart was a minister for all ages. He taught us church history and the catechism and we were confirmed under him. I still remember by confirmation verse that he gave me, Romans 8:1. He was so much fun during summer vacation, bible school and church camp. We were blessed to have him as our minister.

I thank the Lord for Howard Hart and men like him who fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Just think, by God’s grace, a crown of righteousness awaits his reception, and for those who have loved His appearing.

I knew Howard since I was 10 yrs old…I remember then a sermon in which he talked about squeezing the nickel so hard that the buffalo squeaks!….later in December of 1978 he and Barb led a group from Sutton and my Dad and myself from Freeman on a most memorable trip to the Holy Land. His love for the Lord and care for each person is such a treasure. He was a special man.

A loving man of people and for the Lord. He was a modern day surfer rider when we started the church in KC He was the only one who ever sang the song. Juanita to me. He will be greatly missed until we see him in heaven

Howard is precious, combining a very powerful intellect (a sure knowledge) with a deep love (a hearty trust) for his savior, Jesus Christ. We were blessed by his service and example, his high standards for ministers. And, thankfully, Howard lived to see four Red Sox world championships!

Howard had a great passion for the gospel and I miss his humorous stories he always shared during meal times at Synod.

Sometime around 1996 I found myself becoming Reformed in my theology through various readings and so I looked in the phone book under 'Reformed Churches' and found St. John's in Lincoln. My daughter and I (along with 2 friends and their families) started attending and, therefore, Rev. Hart was my first Reformed pastor. I/we learned a lot under his faithful and winsome pulpit ministry, for which I praise the Lord. I'm thankful that he is now living in the presence of the Lord that he continually proclaimed.

My sister will be 32 as of this coming Monday afternoon. When she was born, my dad was still attending Westminster Seminary California, but was planning to do a summer internship at St. John’s in Lincoln, which was still our home church. Accordingly, my parents delayed having my baby sister baptized until she could receive it from the same font as her two older siblings (though Hannah and I were baptized by Howard Hart’s predecessor, Alan Mallory).

My dad finished seminary the following year and went to serve churches in SD, so I’m afraid I don’t remember him as well as other commenters here might. I do remember (partly thanks to my mom) that he would call my aforementioned sister “the bag lady”: when I was a kid, my parents had my sisters and I carry Bibles, notebooks, etc. to church in small, personalized tote bags.

He will be missed. He baptized my wife when she was a baby. I always enjoyed his sense of humor. You could see and hear his joy in Christ.
