Obituary

Phyllis Gossel, 96, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, March 17, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Emery, SD.

Phyllis (Hoeltzner) Gossel was born August 7, 1928, in Parkston, South Dakota to John and Elizabeth Degen. She attended school at Ethan, Notre Dame Academy – Mitchell, South Dakota, and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1946. She worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone until she married Elmer Hoeltzner in 1947. She then worked many jobs including babysitting at the Mitchell Air Force Base, A&W, and Day and Night Café.

She met and then married Clifford Gossel on October 7, 1960. They moved to Emery, South Dakota in December 1963, where Cliff farmed and Phyllis helped with taking care of the livestock on the farm along with co-managing the Holiday Inn in Mitchell, and managing the Dew Drop Inn in Emery. Phyllis loved her gardening and taking care of her flowers. Her children and grandchildren were her life. She was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church and Holy Family Catholic Church.

Phyllis is survived by her son, Bob, Mount Vernon, SD; daughter, Linda (Jon) Rehm, Brodhead, WI; two grandsons, Terry Rehm, Middleton, WI, and Ryan Rehm (Angela), Stoughton, WI; and two great-granddaughters, Melanie and Lily Rehm.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two children.

Phyllis was a loving, caring person who was always optimistic. She never lost her faith, and she will be missed by all.
