Obituary

Nancy Wuollet, 63, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Visitation will be Friday, October 23, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Nancy Ann Wuollet, daughter of William and Judith Schultz, was born in Apple Valley, CA, and grew up in Belle Plaine, MN. Minnesota remained home for much of her life and was where she began raising her five children. Eventually, Nancy discovered her love for South Dakota after taking a trip there and decided to move with her children and spend the remainder of her life there. She adored making memories with the people she loved. From camping adventures and spontaneous trips to late-night board games and decorating for every holiday, she had a way of making even the simplest moments feel special.

Nancy was devoted to every role she was blessed with: mom, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, grandmother. But her capacity to love extended beyond her own family, as so many of her children’s friends called her “Mom,” with their children considering her a grandmother. She gave freely of herself and left an impression on many lives through her kindness, generosity, outgoing personality, and unwavering optimism.

Being a dedicated Lutheran, Nancy’s faith carried her through the darkest moments of her life. She often reminded those around her, “Everything happens for a reason — good or bad,” a simple belief that reflected the strength and faith with which she lived her life. In 2018, Nancy was diagnosed with metastatic cancer - starting in her kidneys and progressing to her bones. For almost eight years, she faced an incredibly difficult battle with courage and determination. During so much darkness, she continued to find the light.

Through that time, she was blessed with many joyful moments: meeting new grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, connecting with new relatives, making memories with loved ones, and touching the lives of people around her. Those who knew Nancy often said that during some of their most difficult moments, she had a remarkable ability to change their perspective and be the uplifting spirit they needed. Even when facing her own struggles, she continued to find ways to encourage and brighten the lives of others.

Nancy was blessed to celebrate her 63rd birthday surrounded by many of the people she loved. In the days that followed, she continued to receive visits from family and friends who came to share their love, memories, and final moments with her. She was surrounded by love until the very end, with her firstborn daughter by her side as she took her final breath.

Nancy is survived by her children: Natasha Schmidt, Nicole Schmidt, Lance (Rita) Schmidt, Nevada (David) Cahoy; 16 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and her siblings and in-laws, Joann (Al) Pomije, Sandra (Gil) Hernandez, Troy (Sara) Schultz, and Darrell (Cathy) Rosenbrock.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Judith Schultz; her son, Cody Schmidt; her grandparents, Vernon Schultz, Sylvia Heinisch, Paul Huettner, and Vivian Chesney; and her brother, Paul Schultz.

Nancy was truly an angel on earth. She spent her life loving fiercely, giving generously, creating memories, and making people feel as though they belonged. Though her family and friends will forever feel the emptiness left by her passing, her love, memories, impact and spirit will continue to live on in everyone whose life she touched.

Nancy had a beautiful way of making you feel like you had known each other for years. She was like the calm in the store. Just being in her presence made me feel at ease. There was just something about her. The world was a better place with her in it. I wish healing and peace to Nancy's children. She was an amazing mom and her love for her family was greater than any I have ever seen- and, vice versa. Its been years since I last talked to Nancy as I was once close with her daughter.. But I remember her openness and kindness from the very first time Nicole introduced me to her at the Corn Palace Festival. She was a lovely soul, indeed.

Nancy was a dear friend who encouraged everyone in their faith in Jesus. We will miss her, especially her presence in church and Bible study at Ascension Lutheran. Nancy held firmly to Jesus' promise when he said, I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and who ever lives by believing in me will never die. Through faith in Jesus we will see Nancy again.
