Obituary

Mike Jones, 72, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Mike Jones was born June 24, 1952, in Parkston, SD. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in family, friendship, and unforgettable moments. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Erlene Jones, his brothers, Pat and Richard, and nephew Dustin Jones.

Mike was the heart of his family—devoted, steady, and full of life. A gifted storyteller with a sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, he had a rare ability to bring laughter to any room. Whether around a campfire, a dinner table, or out in the fields, his stories became treasured family lore, often retold with the same joy and warmth he shared them.

His passion was watching Bryce and Reed, his nieces and nephews and his grandchildren compete in sports.  He also enjoyed and always looked forward to hunting pheasants and deer with his boys and grandsons.  These outings were never just about the hunt—they were about bonding, teaching, and making memories that would last for generations. Mike was also a passionate Minnesota Vikings and Notre Dame fighting Irish fan and rarely missed a game. One of his favorite trips was when he attended a Notre Dame football game in South Bend with his sons.

Mike is survived by his two sons, Bryce Jones and his wife Kelsi, and Reed Jones and his partner Jenny Todd. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Devon (24), Mason (19), River (15), Oakley (14), Lennon (9), Miller (5), and Jett (3). His spirit lives on in each of them—in their laughter, their love for the outdoors, and their ability to find joy in the little things. Mike is also survived by his brothers, Tim (Deb) of Mitchell, Rick of Hot Springs, SD, and Randy (Dawn) of Oregon.

Mike will be remembered not just for the life he lived, but for how he made others feel—welcomed, seen, and always smiling. His humor, his stories, and his unwavering love for his family will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, June 2nd at the Moose Lodge in Mitchell, SD. Memorial and story sharing will begin at 4:15 and prayer service will follow from 6:30 to 7:15. The family would love to share the evening with all those influenced by Mike’s time on this earth. This will be a celebration of life and look forward to hearing the many stories you all have of a man larger than life that brought laughter to so many.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell at a later date. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Thank you,

Jones Family

Mike was the best neighbor. Thoughtful, fun, and caring. Mitchell has lost a kind soul. My last conversation with him was a phone call . He called to tell me his family had found my mother’s recipe for a favorite dessert. He just wanted me to know that my mother, Gladys, was remembered.

Wow. Mike. You will be missed. You were just part of Mitchell, from The Mitchell Kernels, The Jones Boys at Palace Cleaners, to the insurance salesman at Great Plains Insurance, and the list goes on. Mike some great times will be remembered, some we can tell and some will be remembered in our hearts but no matter what. You made Mitchell a great place to have fun, laugh and have a great time. R.I.P.
