Mavis V. (Boyd) Haines was born in Aurora County (Palatine Township) on March 12, 1935, to William and DeEtte (Caesar) Boyd. Mavis attended the Stoddard and Bell country schools and then graduated from Plankinton High School in 1953. On June 21, 1953, she was united in marriage to Charles Haines at the Plankinton Methodist Church. They lived in White Lake and Woonsocket before purchasing the Plankinton Locker on Main Street of Plankinton in May of 1955. Mavis and Chuck ran the Plankinton Locker until they both retired and sold the business on January 1, 1995. Mavis was employed as the Plankinton City Librarian from 1998-2009. As Mavis was an avid reader, being a librarian was a perfect fit. She was privileged to help move the library to the new school location in 2003.

Mavis was the oldest and longest member of the Plankinton United Methodist Church, and was very involved in the Queen Esther Circle, serving as president for many years. One of her greatest accomplishments was being the chairperson of the building committee for a new church and parsonage. She was a 60th year member and Past Matron of Lakotah Chapter No. 30 Order of the Eastern Star and was a Grand Officer of the SD Grand Chapter of 1972. Mavis was a member of the planning committee for the 100th year celebration for the City of Plankinton and a Charter member of the EverReady Club. She thoroughly enjoyed her coffee time with friends and was well known for giving the best hugs. Recently Mavis was blessed with a celebration for her 90th birthday.

Mavis’ family was of great importance to her, she so enjoyed her grandchildren. Mavis touched so many lives on earth and now will continue to do so in heaven. Among those left to mourn are her children: Marlene (Stanlee) Johnson, Jolene (Lynn) Anderson, and Bill (Cheryl) Haines; grandchildren: Chad (Sonja) Johnson, Amy (Matt) Christopherson, Daren (Dani) Johnson, Jeff Anderson, Jill (Cody) Larson, Chyla (Abdul) Willis, Tanner (Kayla) Haines, Ashley (Derek) Bahrenfuss, Eric (Jenna) Nelson; great-grandchildren: Amy (Trevor) Kirkpatrick, Rachel Johnson, RyLeigh Christopherson, Carter Christopherson, Lilee Johnson, Weslee Johnson, Henry Johnson, David (Latavia) Voorhees, Trajan (Katelynn) Anderson, Raylee Fagerhaug, Noah Larson, Mia Larson, Kai Willis, Neveah Willis, Zyen Willis, Brody Haines, Duncan Haines, Teagyn Bahrenfuss, Jhett Nelson; great-great-grandchildren: Dezamiah Voorhees, Legend Voorhees, Brooklynn Anderson, Crew Anderson, and Madlynn Kirkpatrick. Along with all her nieces and nephews.

I helped care for her while she was in rehab in Wessington Springs. She was one of my favorite people to work with. She had the best smile, great laugh and very pleasant to be around.
