Obituary

Mary Vaughan, 81, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully Friday, July 4, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, surrounded by the love of her family. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 15, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Private burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Mary Ellen Vaughan was born August 23, 1943, in Hisle, South Dakota. In 1968, she met the love of her life, Mark Vaughan, and the two were united in marriage on September 5, 1970, in Rapid City. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and deep devotion, spending the past 41 years in Mitchell raising their children and later enjoying the joy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Children were always at the heart of Mary’s life. She dedicated her career to their well-being through her work with the South Dakota State Training School and the Department of Social Services. After retiring in 1997, Mary followed her passion for creativity and opened her own business, The Curiosity Shoppe. Five years later, she fully retired to devote her time entirely to her grandchildren and to the activities she cherished most – hunting, fishing, and spending time with her beloved husband.

Mary was a devout Christian whose faith was central to her life. She found joy in reading, attending Bible study, and sharing coffee and fellowship with her close friends.

She is survived by her three sons: Brad (Tiffany) Vaughan of Mitchell, Mark S. Vaughan of Mitchell, and Jason (Kristi) Vaughan of Salem. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 sisters.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Mark Vaughan; brothers, Joseph and Owen; and sister, Agnes.

Mary’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family and faith will be remembered always. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary and I were social workers/next door office space for many years. She and Mark’a younger sons were just little guys! She was an exceptions Child Protective Services worker. She brought calm to an office that could be quite stressful. I thank Mary for allowing me into her family’s life as long time friends, esp. with her sweet granddaughter Megan Grassel.
