Obituary

Martha Werner, 83, formerly of Emery, SD, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Lincoln, NE. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 27, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (Clayton) in rural Emery. Burial will be in Flat Top Cemetery at Kadoka, SD. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at the church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Martha Frances Werner was born on March 8, 1942, to Leonard and Grace (Johnson) Nyman in Rockford, Illinois. She attended Rockford East High School, graduating in 1960, and the Swedish American Hospital School of Nursing of Rockford, graduating in 1963. On June 4, 1966, Martha was united in marriage to John Werner at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere, Illinois. She enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. 

She was an active partner in her husband’s ministry, participating in the Ladies Aid, LWML, AAL, and Phoebes groups. Yearly activities included making quilts for World Relief and organizing the annual ice cream social/fundraiser. She also taught Weekday School and VBS, sang in the church choir, and played the Autoharp, piano, and organ. In her free time, Martha enjoyed woodworking, drawing, sewing, crafting, baking, and music.

Martha is survived by her son, Warren Werner of Seward, Nebraska; daughter, Rebecca (Grant) Schinto; and sister, Ann Strawn of Broken Bow, Nebraska.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Werner; parents, Leonard and Grace Nyman; sister, Mary Lofquist; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Lofquist and Robert Strawn.

Martha was truly a helpmate to her husband in his service as a pastor and later in his illnesses. She used her gifts in whatever church he served. Loved her children dearly.
