Obituary

Margaret Toben, 91, of Mitchell, SD, peacefully passed away Monday, October 9, 2023, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, October 16, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Margaret Jane Stevens was born June 5th, 1932, to James and Cora (Janes) Stevens in Mitchell, SD, and was baptized on June 25th, 1933. She joined the Methodist Church on March 29th, 1942. 

Margaret graduated from Mitchell High School in 1950. After high school, she attended Nettleton Commercial College for Accounting and graduated on July 27th, 1951. She then worked for a lumber company in Sioux Falls, SD as a bookkeeper for a couple years.

Margaret was united in marriage to Delbert Toben at the First Methodist Church on September 19th, 1954. Together they made their home in Mitchell, and were blessed with four children: Robert, John, Delbert Jr., and Kathleen.

Margaret was a homemaker and did volunteer work. She was very active with Meals on Wheels, in 1992 started at Avera Queen of Peace and took menus and snacks to the patients. In 2014, she had put in 3,034 hours for the hospital. She was also a treasurer for the United Methodist Women, the church women’s circle, involved with the PTA, and worked at the Whittier School Library.

Margaret enjoyed family vacations, all family gatherings, knitting and crossword puzzles. When she moved to Wesley Acres, she still did crossword puzzles, zig-saw puzzles, and family get togethers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert (Sylvina) Toben of Sioux Falls, John Toben of Mitchell, Delbert (Lynn) Toben of Sioux Falls, and Kathy (Larry) Gebel of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jake Toben, Shanegail Awisan, Cameron (Edina) Toben, Philip Toben, Tina (Todd) Russell, and Jesse (Chelsea) Gebel; four great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert; her parents; brothers, James (Erma) Stevens and Robert (Sylvia) Stevens; and sister, Elizabeth (Bob) Thurlow.

Margaret was one of the most dedicated volunteers at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. She was always there for the patients and the staff. Today she is greeting everyone in heaven and praying for you too! May she rest in peace!

Margaret was a wonderful aunt and a very giving human being,. She had a great sense of humor, and was always willing to listen to any little problem. She truly was happiest when she was helping someone else. Sincere sympathy to Robert, John, Delbert, and Kathy and all their families.
