Marcella Chmela, 106, of Kimball, SD, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024, at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral Mass will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 3, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. Burial will be at Kimball Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Funeral Mass with Rosary at 1:00 PM.

Marcella Chmela was born February 8, 1918, to Anton and Christine (Sluka) Toupal in Kimball, SD. She attended Brule County Country Schools.

Marcella married Leon Chmela on June 8, 1937, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. She and Leon lived on farms near Pukwana and Gann Valley.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, playing cards, baking, and cooking.

Marcella is survived by her son, Dwayne (Claudia) Chmela of Kimball; daughter-in-law, Doris Ann Chmela of Kimball, SD; sister, Helen Petersen of Tracy, MN; five grandchildren, Damon Chmela, Darin Chmela, Dawn Hellbusch, Denise Rutten, and Danette Paschke; 11 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon in 2009; son, Dennis in 2018; sisters, Virgie Potter, Florence Pazour, LaVerne Peters, Sue Almjeld, and Doreen; and brothers, Jerry, John, Wally, James, Harry, Willard, and Jimmy.
