Obituary

M. Grace Wick, 96, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, February 13, 2022, at her home under hospice care in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, February 17, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Mary Grace Wick was born to T.A. “AI” Houser and Lillian M. (Peters) Houser on March 23, 1925 in Oacoma, SD. ln her early years Grace attended country school west of Chamberlain, SD.

Grace married Carl E. Wick on February 15, 1943 in Butte, NE. They were lifetime partners for 63 years.

Grace worked most of her life. Since she was the oldest in her family, she carried a lot of responsibility. She worked in her early years on the farm and doing various jobs. Grace took a bookkeeping job in Redfield and became a manager at the Sears order desk in Chamberlain, SD, until her husband and her moved to Sioux City, lA. She was employed by the Swift Packing House until they moved back to South Dakota for Carl's work. At that time, she worked at Derby's restaurant. They eventually moved to Mitchell, and that is when they started their own business called Wick Painting. They had their business for 42 years. Grace worked at the Food Pantry in Mitchell after her husband passed away. She enjoyed the interaction and fellowship she had with everyone there.

Grace was part of the Women’s Ministry and was involved in different activities. Grace helped many people in her lifetime including the homeless. She thought of others before herself. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Mitchell for 48 years. She was also a member of the Hart Ranch Resort for many years where her children and husband would spend time together. Grace loved horses and she loved to travel. She had a lot of memories she shared with family and friends.

She is survived by her five daughters: Mary Lawver, IA; Jeanne Larson, Mitchell; Linda Frederickson, Tracy, MN; Kathy (Mick) Hanks, Mitchell; and Lorrie (Brian) Berg, Harrisburg; one son, Rick Wick, Sioux Falls; three sisters: Ginny, IA; Kathy, MN; and Verta Mae (Terry); MN; four brothers, Thad (Dorthy) Houser, Sioux Falls; Merele (Linda) Houser, WA; Rod (Debra) Houser, AZ; and Kenny (Sharon) Houser, MN; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Grace joins her husband, Carl Wick; son, Arnie Wick; parents; Lillian and Al Houser; grandparents, Fred and Rosella Peters; sisters, Buelah, Francis, Loy, Betty, Christine, Dorothy Mae, and Alice Faye; brothers, Lorne, Don, and Lawerence, two sons-in-law, Lyle Larson and Greg Frederickson; and brothers-in-law, Ronald and Jim.

Grace was one of the sweetest ladies. I have known her since she and her family lived in Ethan. She has always been a very hard worker and always had a smile. I enjoyed visiting with her.
