Louis Murtha, 59, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, January 27, 2023, in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 3, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Parkston. Visitation will be Thursday, February 2, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 6:30 PM.
Louis “Louie” James Murtha was born June 1, 1963, to William and Betty (Stoebner) Murtha in Parkston, SD. He attended and graduated from Parkston High School. Louie traveled all over the US working road construction, retiring after 30 years. Then taking another construction job with Davison County SD to be close to home, spending more time helping his dad on the farm and taking care of his family.
Louie was united in marriage on November 5, 1994, to Alice Rose Klein at the Parkston United Church of Christ. Together, the couple resided in Mitchell.
Louie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a 3rd degree Knight. He was also a member of the Ethan American Legion.
Louie was a man that had a huge heart and shared his wisdom and time with anyone who was in need of anything. Louie took great pride in his son, Bradley, and his grandchildren. His special place was spending time with his dad on the farm and helping his dad with all that needed to be done to provide love and support for his family. Also being able to have his son & grandson there with him.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Alice; son, Bradley (Jessica Spencer) Murtha of Ocala, FL; grandchildren, Chasity Murtha, Elijah Murtha, James Murtha, and Taylyn Farabee; sisters, Mary Murtha of Parkston, and Jean (Myron) Schmidt of St. Helena, NE; brothers, Lee (Pam) Murtha of Bridgewater, Kevin (Becky) Murtha of Dimock, Kerry (Marcia) Murtha of Parkston, Lynn (Lisa) Murtha of Emery, Glenn (Dee Dee) Murtha of Mitchell, David Murtha of Sturgis, and Lyle Murtha of Casper, WY; brothers-in-law, Ralph (Brenda) Klein Jr., Larry (Peggy) Yates, and Frank (Sandi) Yates; sister-in-law, Jean Watkins; 31 nieces and nephews; and 51 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joel Murtha; sister, Kathleen Friederich; nephew, Brandon Murtha; grandparents, Ed and Josephine Murtha and Otto and Emma Stoebner; father and mother-in-law, Ralph Sr. and Lucille Klein; sister-in-law, Bettina Napier; and several aunts and uncles.
