Obituary

Lloyd Reif, 71, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, December 2, 2023, at his home in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 6, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Storla, SD. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Per Lloyd’s funeral requests, casual blue jean attire is preferred.

Lloyd “Pappy” Joseph Reif was born in Mitchell on March 4th, 1952, to Donald and Bernice (Tegels) Reif.  He grew up in the Salem area where he attended school and church along with his siblings, Louis, Keith, and Judy. As a young man, Lloyd worked primarily in construction and maintenance, mostly staying in the South Dakota area.

Lloyd became sober in 1996 and recently received his 27-year sober chip. He was a proud and active member of the Fellowship of AA where he enjoyed spending time with and helping others including providing a sober house for those that needed it. He considered the group part of his family and enjoyed doing annual conferences and campouts.

Lloyd was united in marriage on June 5th, 1993, to Ruth Uhre. They resided in Rapid City for several years where Lloyd worked in maintenance in the hotel and hospital fields. He and Ruth moved to Mitchell to be closer to family, where Lloyd then worked at Firesteel Healthcare Center until his retirement. After retirement, he still worked part-time at Firesteel, as well as the convenience store that he and Ruth owned.

They have 3 boys together: Mike, Paul, and Joe. He spoke to his children often and enjoyed spending time with them whenever he could. No visit was ever complete without a game or eight of cribbage and a lot of trash talk. Family was very important to Lloyd. He looked forward to the annual Reif family reunions where we could spend a weekend camping together.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Ruth Reif; sons: Mike Zemina of Mitchell, Paul (Julie) Reif of Luverne, and Joe Reif of Luverne; siblings: Louis Reif of Madison, Keith (Dawn) Reif of Lennox, and Judy Reif of Salem; grandchildren: Andrew (Sam) Reif of Sioux Falls, Amanda (Wesley) Berger of Coon Rapids, Ahron (Samantha) Reif of Slidell, and Haley (Ty) Barringer of Midvale; and 5 great-grandchildren: Addie Reif, Corson Berger, Isaiah Berger, Mason Reif, and Piper Barringer. He is also survived by numerous friends who called him Dad, as well as friends of Bill W.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Bernice Reif; grandson, Michael; parents-in-law, Martin and Florence Uhre; and sister-in-law, Vicki Reif.

I’ve known Pappy since 2009 when I moved to Mitchell and I couldn’t begin to tell you the number of times this man has extended his hand in friendship to so many people. Without hesitation, he would do whatever it took to help someone. No matter who or what it was. If he couldn’t do it, no one could. He will truly be missed by a whole community. Love ya Pappy. I’m so sorry Ruth…
