Lloyd (Bud) Kunkel, 89, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, June 5, 2026, at Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Bud Kunkel was born April 13, 1937, in Alexandria, SD, to Raymond and Alma Kunkel. He graduated from Edgerton Consolidated High School in Farmer. Bud loved farming!! There is no greater display of faith than a farmer planting seeds in the field. His farmer's words of wisdom would be: The grass is always greener where you spread the most manure. Bud proudly served his country in the U.S Army National Guard for 20 years.

Left to cherish Bud's memory are his stepsons, Chad (Jill) Larson and Brett Larson; brother, Ron (Gloria) Kunkel; sister, Mary Zeal; six grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Bud is preceded in death by his wife, Maureen Kunkel; parents, Raymond and Alma Kunkel; and sisters, Lucine Merlock and Lois Kayser.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice in Bud’s memory.

Bud was a very special friend. Frank & Bud would talk farming. We would enjoy playing pinochle with him & his friend Louise. Bud's laugh was so pleasant. We made a road trip to his farm & he told us about all the great memories. Sunday before his passing we went & said our goodbye. He said our name & pointed up. Heaven gained an angel. Rest in peace.

Bud was a very important part of our lives. He came often to play cards and have supper with us. He would come and help work cattle, help with silage, help work on tractors, whatever we needed. Loved him like a big brother. May God bless him in a special way because he was a very special person. So sorry not to be able to be at the service but will be saying prayers for his family. May God's blessings be with you.

We have known Bud for a long time and could not find a better person. He always had a smile on his face and was a great conversationist. May he rest in peace with his sisters

Great memories of Bud coming to the Kunkel family farm; playing cards and rolling a toothpick in his mouth. Bud had a great laugh and told great stories. He will be missed.
