LeRoy Degen, 86, of Alexandria, SD, passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Saturday, November 8, at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria. Burial will be at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.
LeRoy William Degen was born on October 21, 1939, to Theodore and Frances (Weber) Degen in Hanson County. LeRoy married Dorothy “Dotty” (Matthews) Degen on August 18, 1959, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. To their union were two sons, Clinton and Calvin.
In 1963, LeRoy and Dorothy moved to the family farm across the James River, where he was born. He helped his dad farm for that year, then continued to farm the land himself till 2015. At that time, his oldest grandson started helping him before taking over the farming.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Dorothy Degen, sons, Clinton (Jane) Degen of Alexandria, and Calvin Degen of Mitchell; siblings, Charles (Sandy) Degen of Alexandria, Charlotte (Arland) Lindsley of Piedmont, SD, sister in-laws, Dorothy and Verna Degen of Mitchell, Pat Degen of Sioux Falls, Mattie Degen, and Thelma Johnson; brother in-law, John (Monica) Matthews of Beeville, TX; grandchildren, Marc Degen, Scott (Revel) Degen, and Chris (Andria) Degen; great-grandchildren, Jessa, Dana, Hadley, Cruze, Memphis, Jax, Jemma, and Jameson.
He is preceded by his parents, Theodore and Frances Degen; siblings, Melvin (Jacque), Arnold, Gerald, and Ted Degen, and Ilene (Willy) Thackeray; and great-grandson, Waylon Degen.
