Kenneth Scholten, 86, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 11, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Kenneth Richard Scholten was born July 22, 1938, in Sanborn, IA to Richard and Caroline Scholten. He grew up on a farm near Sanborn. Ken attended school and graduated from Melvin High School in 1957. He attended college at South Dakota State University and graduated with a BS in Agriculture Education in 1961. He was also a member of the Iowa National Guard for a period of time.
Ken was united in marriage to Joan Marie Brunk on June 13, 1961, in Melvin, IA. After graduation Ken taught school for three years in Remsen, IA and Lake Preston, SD. In 1964, he started working for Cenex, managing a fertilizer plant in Britton, SD. In 1970 they moved to Mitchell and continued working for Cenex and Land O’Lakes as an agronomist/salesman on the road until his retirement in 1999. After retirement, Ken worked part time for Cabela’s in Mitchell for eight years.
Ken loved dancing with his wife, hunting, fishing, woodcarving, and working in his shop and yard. He and Joan spent a lot of time fishing at their trailer north of Pierre, SD.
Ken was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, a quartet, solos, and duet.
Ken is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Brenda (Kent) Schmidt of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Chad (Laura) of Spearfish, SD; four grandsons, Ryan (Danielle) Schmidt, Jason Schmidt, Cade Scholten, and Ian Scholten; great-grandchildren, Luke Scholten, Linnea Schmidt, and Holland Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert (Rosie) Scholten; and sister, Harriet (John) Mouw.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Resurrection Lutheran Church.
