Kathryn Wagner, 89, of Alexandria, SD, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Monday, March 17, at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria. Burial will be at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5:00 PM at the Church with a 4:30 PM prayer service.
Kathryn “Kathy” Marie Wagner, daughter of George and Marguerite (Hanlon) McDowell was born on September 23, 1935. Kathy attended grade school then graduated from Rapid City High School. She then attended Presentation School of Nursing and graduated as an RN with the St. Joseph Unit in 1956.
Kathy was united in marriage to James A. Wagner on October 9, 1956, at St. Michaels Church in Hermosa, SD. They moved to a farm southeast of Alexandria where Kathy lived her entire life before moving into Diamond Care in December of 2024. She loved her chickens and her garden. Kathy worked 45 years at St. Joseph Hospital and later at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital as an RN on the Surgical Floor. She also did some private duty Nursing.
She was a long-time member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church and was on the funeral committee for many years. Kathy assisted with the Memorial Day program through the Legion Auxiliary placing flags on graves for numerous years.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four children, Julie Ruden (Lonnie Glanzer), Marge Wagner, Jack (Teresa) Wagner, and Kaye (Rick) Krietlow; grandchildren, Billy Venosdel, Mat (Paige) Venosdel, Lane (Annie) Ruden, Jase Kayser, Dennis, Tim, Riley, Dylan, Chantel, Bridget, and Cassie; great-grandchildren, Willa, Boone, Shawn, Blake, Cole, Ryker, Koby, Hayden, Gage, Damon, Mya, Charlie, Chesney, Wyatt, Layla, Samantha, and Rory; were all her pride and joy; along with many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Wagner; son in-law, William Ruden; two brothers, William and Jack, and numerous brothers and sisters in-law.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery or Alexandria Fire Department.
In honor of Kathryn’s favorite holiday, St. Patrick's Day, the family would encourage everyone to wear green for the services.
