John “Jack” Wayne Schaefer, 78, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, January 8, 2023, at his home in Mitchell surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services are pending under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

John “Jack” Schaefer was born March 13, 1944, to Leonard and Marcella (Ronan) Schaefer in Redfield, SD. He lived and attended school in Huron, SD.

Jack later moved to Mitchell, SD in the 70's, and became a pioneer in the development of cable TV systems throughout the region. He also became involved in the motel/hotel industry where he built and owned several properties. Upon retiring, he returned to work for the South Dakota State Parks system in Fort Randall, SD for 17 years.

Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ronna; four children, Kimberley, Shannon Schaefer Bollack (spouse Rodney), Suzanne, and John (spouse Sarah); 7 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 2 great-grandsons; and two sisters, Sharon Schaefer and Patricia (Schaefer) Humphrey.

Wow! What a suprise! I had no idea Jack passed... I have alot of memories with the Schaefers and Jack and Ronna taking care of me when I worked for them down in Norfolk Neb. You were a great Man, Jack! Im glad I could call you a friend..... RIP!

I just heard of Jackâ€™s passing. I am so sorry to hear of the news. I worked with Jack for 4 summers at the State Park. He made work fun and was a mentor to me as I was a college student at the time. We had a lot of conversations along the way and he always kept a watch over us youngsters and that made me feel safe. He talked about his family all the time and you were his pride and joy. My deepest sympathy to you all.
