Obituary

John Brady, 80, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday, July 31, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Private burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

John Richard Brady was born March 13, 1945, to Ezra and Helen (Spencer) Brady, in Mitchell, SD. John enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He served on the Submarine USS Piper. John graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

John married Debora (Dickerman) on February 15th, 1985, in Custer, SD.

John was employed by South Dakota State Training School as a group leader and retired as the Superintendent. He was also a youth forestry camp program director.

He was an avid hunter of deer, pheasant, turkey, and Christmas trees. He loved training and hunting with his American Brittney Spaniels. He enjoyed fishing in all seasons. John's happiest hours were spent at a little log cabin outside of Custer, SD, where he enjoyed the wind in the pines and watering his trees. In Custer, John always had pan-fried trout for Sunday suppers. He spent many hours doing genealogy, collecting coins, stamps, and model trains. John was an expert at dry humor in one-line zingers, but at the same time, always supportive and loving of his family.

John is survived by his wife, Debora Brady, and his son, Donald Brady.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Helen Brady.
