Joan Ann Schoenfelder was born July 26, 1927, in rural Parkston, SD, on the family farm to Edward and Josephine (Friedrich) Murtha. She enjoyed growing up with 11 siblings. Joan attended four years of country school, then Sacred Heart in Parkston, and graduated from Parkston High School in 1945. After high school, Joan joined the Cadet Nurses Corp in August 1945. She received her RN training at Presentation School of Nursing in Aberdeen and finished at St. Joseph School Hospital in Mitchell, receiving her RN degree in 1948.

Joan married Marvin Schoenfelder on July 6, 1948, in Parkston. They raised their eight children, Colette, Bob, Dan, Pat, Tim, Paul, Jessica, and John on a farm near Dimock. After they left the farm, Joan and Marvin moved into Dimock. She enjoyed fishing outings and camping on the Missouri River.

Joan's life was centered around her family and Church.  Joan was a sister, mom, friend, and grandma to everyone who crossed her path. She loved to pray for anyone needing prayers. Her favorite prayer book and Saint to pray to was Padre Pio. Joan was a proud member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Altar Society, CCD teacher, church choir, founding member of the prayer group, and quilting group.

Joan is survived by six sons: Robert (Jean) of Dimock, Daniel (Susan) of Dimock, Patrick (Pam) of Brandon, Timothy of Bridgeport, WV, Paul of Hot Springs, and John (Linda) of Rapid City; one daughter, Jessica (Keith) Glover, Sioux Falls;  25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; siblings: Noreen of Houston, TX, Carol of Pittsburg, PA, John of Dimock, and Tim of Bartlesville, OK.

What an artist does on canvas, Joan did with materials. With her Skilled sewing she created beautiful quilts (even a velvet one). wallhangings, clothing into works of art ! Joan would take an outdated garment apart and recreate it into a lovely new fashion. She always looked great! It didn’t stop there-she loved a beautiful table setting with lace tablecloths and candlesticks—even for breakfast when you were visiting from out of town. She made you feel very special! SHE was very SPECIAL—SHE was our sister. Carol and Noreen

Mom we will all miss you but you have instilled a part of you in all who ever crossed your path.
The love you gave to every child I brought into your home, the friends we all brought into your home ame, and the heartache and the laughter we all shared together with you.
You saw us through some really tough times, most recently was my back surgery and cancer.
You prayed and taught us all how to pray.
How to cook, how love, and how to go on with life.

RIP momma I will always and forever have you in my heart!

I think about all the fun times we had playing at each others’ place when we were children. The stories of our mothers going to nursing school together. May she and Marvin be looking over all of you from above.,
