Joan Hiles, 88, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Monday, January 5, 2026, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, January 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at the church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Joan Marie Andachter was born on January 24, 1937, in Delmont, South Dakota, to Theodore and Hazel (Arionus) Andachter. Joan attended school in Delmont, graduating in 1955.

Following graduation, Joan attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Mitchell, where she received her nursing degree in 1958. She remained in the nursing field for the next 44 years. This included working at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, HI, Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, SD, Davison County Community Health, and finishing her career with the Mitchell School District as a school nurse.

Joan met Cecil Hiles through a mutual friend, and they married on July 25, 1959, at Hickum Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. While in Hawaii, they were blessed with two children. Following Cecil's retirement from the military, the couple moved back to South Dakota, settling just north of Mitchell near Loomis. It was after Joan began her career at Methodist Hospital that the couple moved to Mitchell. It was there that another daughter was born.

Joan was active in the community. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was on the church council in various positions, ran the Trinity Lutheran Church quilting group for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a member of several prayer groups.

Joan is survived by her three children: David (Shalli) Hiles of Mitchell, Celia Burkinshaw of Mitchell, and Brenda (Jay) Ivers of Mitchell; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Linda Miiller of Mitchell and Cheryl Miiller of Mitchell.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; parents, Theodore and Hazel Andachter; sister, Judy; grandson, Jesse Burkinshaw; great-grandson, Anthony Herron; brothers-in-law, Robert and Dale Miiller; niece, Pamela Miiler; and nephew, Richard Miiller.

Dave and all the family. Sorry for your loss. Knowing the end is coming and even that it is close at hand, doesn't take away the pain of loss. But then the time comes that the joys and memories of good times are remembered and cherished.
