James “Jim” Cross, 61, of Woonsocket, SD, passed away per his wishes at home with loved ones by his side on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 28, at RiverTree Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Letcher, SD. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service at RiverTree Church. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
James Dean Cross was born November 4, 1963, to Russ and Judy (Mikkelson) Cross in Chamberlain, SD. He grew up in the Mount Vernon area which he called home his entire life. Jim graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1983. During Jim's high school career, he was very active on the track team. He set several school records and retained them for several years.
Jim married Kimberly Ann Peppmuller on October 20, 1984, in Mitchell, SD.
As a young man, Jim developed a true love for horses. He hauled the entire family to Oklahoma to enroll in horseshoeing school. Along with his love of horses and speed, he naturally became an avid horse racing enthusiast. Jim and Kim raced many horses throughout Nebraska and South Dakota for years. He had a very deep love for horse racing. Jim enjoyed watching his grandchildren's baseball, football, and basketball games. Jim supported several young people in their rodeo endeavors. He rarely missed a rodeo that one of his "kids" were competing in. Jim was a truck driver by trade. There was not another man more meticulous about the cleanliness of not only is trucks, but also of his peer's trucks.
Above all, Jim’s greatest love was for his wife, children, and grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy and meaning to his life.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kim; children, Jamie (Eric) Deutsch, Frankfort SD, Kyle Cross, and Tanner (Karlee) Cross, Woonsocket; and grandchildren, Lane, Kiptyn, Oaklyn, Addilyn, and Karona; parents, Russ and Judy; one sister, Darla (David) Enfield; father-in-law, Jerry Moody of Woonsocket, SD; sisters-in-law, Shelly (David) Piper, Pam (Jamie) Rasmussen, Tanya (Dave) Mammenga, and Christie (Jeremy) Gunkel; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Connie Earley, grandparents, and nephew.

Our sincere condolences for all of you! I have good memories of Jim in our class of 83! He always was talking about riding his horse. The family pictures are so beautiful he had built a wonderful life with you all. We are so sorry for the painful days you have been through and the pain of loss. Our prayers are with you .
