Jed Nathan Hockett was born on October 15, 1958, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He graduated from Winner High School in 1976 and went on to double major in Business and Psychology at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas.
Jed began his career at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls and continued in journalism with the Casper Star-Tribune and the Daily Republic. He later transitioned to a successful career in insurance, working for American Republic Insurance, Bankers Life & Casualty Insurance, and ultimately Lawrence & Schiller in Sioux Falls. Licensed in 35 states, Jed achieved top agent status twice, earning trips to Hawaii and Rome, Italy.
Jed loved his family deeply and was a devoted father to his two children, Tyler and Carissa. He also held a special place in his heart for Tyler's wife, Amber, and Carissa's husband, Michael, loving them as his own. Jed was a proud grandfather to his four cherished grandchildren: Carlee, Tucker, Halle, and Annie. He spent his days praying for his family—his children, their spouses, his grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews—lifting each of them up to the Lord.
A man of unwavering faith, Jed read his Bible daily, completing it multiple times each year. In one of his journals, he wrote, “The greatest thing that has happened to me was when I surrendered every part of my life to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” His favorite verses were John 3:16 and 1 John 1:9, which will be engraved on his memorial headstone as a testament to his faith.
Jed spent many hours fishing on the rocks of the Missouri River with his son, brothers, and nephews. Jed also loved pheasant hunting. He was always Tyler and Carissa’s number 1 fan in all their activities.
Jed is survived by his son, Tyler (Amber) Hockett; daughter, Carissa (Michael) Shinstine; grandchildren: Carlee Hockett, Tucker Hockett, Halle Shinstine, and Annie Shinstine; brothers: Robert Jr. (Jeannie), Joe, Ernie (Kris), and Rich (Amy); sisters: Sandy (Daniel) Mosteller, and Anna (Daniel) Nessethand; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Evelyn; brother, John; and sisters, Carla and Cheryl.
Jed will be greatly missed, but his legacy of faith, love, and devotion to his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his steadfast love for the Lord, his family, his personality, and his kind heart.
His family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, to consider helping with a memorial headstone.
