Obituary

Jed Hockett, 66, of Sioux Falls, SD, was called home to Heaven on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at his home in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, January 20, at Northridge Baptist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

***Change of service location to Northridge Baptist Church***

Jed Nathan Hockett was born on October 15, 1958, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He graduated from Winner High School in 1976 and went on to double major in Business and Psychology at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas.

Jed began his career at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls and continued in journalism with the Casper Star-Tribune and the Daily Republic. He later transitioned to a successful career in insurance, working for American Republic Insurance, Bankers Life & Casualty Insurance, and ultimately Lawrence & Schiller in Sioux Falls. Licensed in 35 states, Jed achieved top agent status twice, earning trips to Hawaii and Rome, Italy.

Jed loved his family deeply and was a devoted father to his two children, Tyler and Carissa. He also held a special place in his heart for Tyler's wife, Amber, and Carissa's husband, Michael, loving them as his own. Jed was a proud grandfather to his four cherished grandchildren: Carlee, Tucker, Halle, and Annie. He spent his days praying for his family—his children, their spouses, his grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews—lifting each of them up to the Lord.

A man of unwavering faith, Jed read his Bible daily, completing it multiple times each year. In one of his journals, he wrote, “The greatest thing that has happened to me was when I surrendered every part of my life to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” His favorite verses were John 3:16 and 1 John 1:9, which will be engraved on his memorial headstone as a testament to his faith.

Jed spent many hours fishing on the rocks of the Missouri River with his son, brothers, and nephews. Jed also loved pheasant hunting. He was always Tyler and Carissa’s number 1 fan in all their activities.

Jed is survived by his son, Tyler (Amber) Hockett; daughter, Carissa (Michael) Shinstine; grandchildren: Carlee Hockett, Tucker Hockett, Halle Shinstine, and Annie Shinstine; brothers: Robert Jr. (Jeannie), Joe, Ernie (Kris), and Rich (Amy); sisters: Sandy (Daniel) Mosteller, and Anna (Daniel) Nessethand; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Evelyn; brother, John; and sisters, Carla and Cheryl.

Jed will be greatly missed, but his legacy of faith, love, and devotion to his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his steadfast love for the Lord, his family, his personality, and his kind heart.

His family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, to consider helping with a memorial headstone.

Well brother your race is over. You crossed the finish line. I’m sure brother John and mom and dad were there to greet you upon your arrival. You will be greatly missed. The good times we had will never be forgotten. Memories of Walleye fishing, pheasant and deer hunting , snd our golf throw downs will never be forgotten. Rest high on that mountain brother and we’ll be seeing you later on.

The Snyder cousins were so blessed to grow up with sweet Jed and the Hockett kids. My husband, Bryan, was adopted as the 7th brother. We spent so much time in SD during pheasant hunting as well as other family events. It has broken my heart to lose John and now Jed. .my heart goes out to Jed's children, Tyler and Carissa. They have beautiful families and Tyler, he lost his best friend. Tyler was an extraordinary son and also brings great pride to the whole family. I wish I could be there - families should be together after such a great loss. Know that I am always as close as your hearts. 💕

I am so sorry for your loss. We get to be in this temporary home and touch the lives of those that God puts in front of us and then move to our permanent home with Jesus. Your memories sound wonderful and I hope you cherish them all as God gave those memories to you as a gift. You and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

Your love pointed me to Jesus and for that, I am forever grateful. As hard as it is to say goodbye here on earth it gives me great joy to know I will see you again
I love you.

Dad, you were my best friend, and my greatest supporter. I love you so much, and words can't express how proud I am to be your son. The memories we shared--our laughs, golf, fishing, road hunting--will stay with me forever. Thank you for teaching me what it means to be strong. I'll carry your wisdom and your love of Jesus with every day. I miss you so much, but Dad, I know you're at peace now. No more pain. See you someday in Heaven! Forever your son, Tyler
