Obituary

Jean King, 96, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 28, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Bertha “Jean” King was born May 13, 1928 to William and Edna (Moore) Wigham in Adams Minnesota. Jean graduated from Adams High School in Adams, MN.

In June of 1947 Jean married Raphael “Ray” King in Adams, MN. Jean and Ray moved to Mitchell, SD in 1949, where she raised her ten children on the family farm.

Jean started her career working at Wilge Memorial Home as a Dietary Food Supervisor and then with Avera Brady Nursing Home.

Jean enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, and loved green plants. She also enjoyed playing cards, putting puzzles together, and doing word search books.

Later in life, Jean met Robert Smetana where they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida.

Jean is survived by her children, Pat Thorson of Mitchell, Susan Rudloff (Sam Kennedy) of Munster, IN, Robert (Jane) King of Aberdeen, SD, Deb King (Kenny Gilliland) of Port Matilda, PA, Sheryl (Marshall) Smith of Volin,SD, Lori King (Terry Kaufman) of Clark, SD, Cindy (Todd) Miiller of Mitchell SD, Tim King (Josala Landvick); sisters, Joyce (Dave) Gomer and Dorothy Anderson; brother, Paul Wigham; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray King, and sons, Richard King and David King. She was also preceded in death by special friend, Robert Smetana, and brothers, Robert Wigham, Billie Wigham, and Duane Wigham.

I worked with Jean when I first started at Brady! She was a good friend and coworker to be with. I think she could run cycles around us. She sure worked hard. Prayers to the family. She is going to be missed

My deepest sympathies to the King family. I have known and loved Jean for about 50 years, when I taught her children in the Catholic School. She has always been a special lady and has earned her reward in Heaven. God bless her family.
