Obituary

Gene Derdall, 86, of Kimball, SD, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday, November 6, from 5-7:00 PM at Kimball Protestant Parish with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Burial will be at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Gene Allen Derdall was born May 4, 1939, to Glen and Georgiaetta (Thoms) Derdall in Brookings, SD. He grew up on the family farm near Brookings and graduated from Brookings High School. After high school, Gene joined the US Army in 1962.

After his service in the Army, Gene returned and married Carol Schlotte on May 27, 1966. They resided in Milbank before moving to Kimball in 1970.

In his earlier years, Gene rode bulls and saddle broncs. He also AI’d cattle and owned Horseshoe Bar in Kimball from 1970 to 1977, before farming east of Kimball and later settling south of town. Gene then started trucking until his retirement.

He was a member of the Kimball Rodeo Club and American Legion.

Gene is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Geoff (Tonya) of Pukwana, Jessy (Nikki) of Sioux Falls, and Grant of Ethan; and grandsons, Mason and Evan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald; and nephew, Dan.

Carol, Geoff and Grant I am so sorry to see that Gene had passed and I missed the funeral. His time here was memorable and I will always remember him as one of the sweetest men I have ever met. Prayers for peace in your hearts going into the holiday season 💕

Gene was such a wonderful man. Always smiling with a great sense of humor. Hard working , you always felt better after talking with Gene. So sorry for your loss.
