Obituary

Gary Barrows, 85, of Mitchell, SD, formerly of Stickney, SD, died Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 19, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Private family burial will be in Dudley Cemetery at rural Stickney.

Gary Douglas Barrows was born on July 11, 1941, to William and Vivian (Teesdale) Barrows. He graduated from Stickney High School in 1959. On November 15, 1963, Gary was united in marriage to Sharon Van Genderen, daughter of Cornie and Martha Van Genderen.

The couple lived in Stickney before moving to a farm south of town, where Gary farmed and worked at the Stickney Coop Elevator. Following a machinery sale in 1990, he worked at the State Training School at night and at National Foods during the day until an accident in 1999 forced his retirement.

Gary and Sharon lived in Stickney for several years before moving to Mitchell in 2007. In December 2022, they moved into Avera Brady Assisted Living.

Gary is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sharon; son, Barry (Mary) Barrows; son-in-law, Jim; grandchildren Derek (Abbie) Grace, Jevon (Megan) Grace, Paige (Zachary) Bryan; great-grandchildren, Parker, Mason, and Sawyer Grace; sister, Janis (Bobby) Miller; sisters-in-law, Audrey Van Genderen, and Sherma (Bruce) Santure.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Vivian Barrows; Father In-Law & Mother In-Law, Martha & Cornie Vangenderen; his daughter, Becky Lynne Grace; his stepfather, Lawrence Meoska; his brother, Steve Barrows; and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Van Genderen.

Many fond high school memories of Gary. We ran track together and in the spring medley he handed the baton to me. He was a speedster.

I have often thought of Gary unloading blue grass off of farmers trailers up into semi s.. He was STRONG , hr after hr he worked . GOD BLESS

I worked nights at the old Training School with Gary. He was always conscientious, kind, and personable with a smile on his face just like the one in the picture above.

Sharon & family, sending my sympathy to you. I remember the days at the State Training School. Gary was always a pleasant person to be around. So sorry for your loss. 🙏
