Francis Young, 91, of Mitchell, SD, died Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 23, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:00 PM Rosary.

Francis (Fly) Leonard Young was born March 2, 1933, to Clifford and Margaret (Haines) Young in Mitchell, SD. Francis attended school in Mitchell, graduating from Notre Dame High School.

Francis was united in marriage to DeEtta Bates on August 19, 1955, in Mitchell, SD, and to this union five children were born.

Francis enjoyed being outdoors, especially when it involved hunting, gardening, or one of his numerous trips with his sons to Canada on fishing expeditions. He also enjoyed traveling to visit family and formerly traveled to Mexico during winter months. Francis was also a coin collector and was always tinkering with a project.

Francis was a member of the American Legion and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Francis is survived by his wife, DeEtta; sons, Casey and Kurt (Angie) Young all of Mitchell; daughters, Kim (John) Huston of Muncie, IN, Kathy (Deryk) Ward of Gallatin, TN, and Karen (Calvin) Geersen of Martin, SD; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brothers: John of Omaha, NE, Kenneth (Jan) of Yankton, James (Karen) of Sioux Falls, Keith of Mitchell, Robert (Susan) of Humble, TX, and Joseph of Charlotte, NC; and sisters: Beverly Boyle of Phoenix, AZ, Lois (Chuck) Paulson of Mitchell, Linda (James) Hanson of Castle Rock, CO, Margaret (Gerald) Loomis of Sioux Falls, Carol (Doug) Oleson of CO, and Judy (Mark) Javersak of MO. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, daughter-in-law Vicki Prusha, and brother-in-law James Boyle, and sisters-in-law, Barb Young and Shirley Young.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Helping with Horse Power, American Legion, or VFW.
