Emma Herron, 96, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. A graveside service will be at 10:00 AM Friday, August 9, at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Emma Laurina Kowalke Herron was born on July 15, 1928, to William Kowalke and Ruth Colburn in Wolsey, SD.

On July 4, 1945, Emma married John B. Herron in Mitchell, SD. After John’s honorable discharge from the military, they started their family. They had three children, Barbara Merritt, Linda Hargan, and Dawn Clark.

John and Emma found great joy in traveling to visit their siblings and children. Emma’s life was a testament to the joy found in simple pleasures. She had a flair for fashion and a keen eye for style. She loved shopping, always on the lookout for the perfect outfit or jewelry that made her feel and look her best. Emma appreciated a good game of bingo, loved to watch golf on TV, had a fondness for cats, and adored eating a sweet treat. She also enjoyed watching her family and friends bowl. Whether she was cheering them on or simply enjoying their company.

Emma is survived by her three daughters, Barbara Merritt of Lexington, NC, Linda (Dennis) Hargan of Mitchell, SD, and Dawn (Carey) Clark of Mitchell, SD; 7 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby Bemis of Brookings, SD; and brother, Bernard Kowalke of Spearfish, SD.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Herron; two infant children, Sandra and Pamela; her parents; and siblings, Mildred Dornor and Otto Kowalke.
