Elmer Luverne Herrmann was born July 11, 1928 in Dimock, South Dakota to Henry and Mary Herrmann. He attended various country schools through the eighth grade while helping on the family farm. He worked for REA for about a year, which is where he got his training as a power lineman. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served one year in Korea during the Korean War, finishing out his time stateside. He was honorably discharged in October 1953.
After leaving the Army, he settled in the Mitchell area. He farmed for a while until he got a job with Northwestern Public Service Company.
