Elmer Luverne Herrmann was born July 11, 1928 in Dimock, South Dakota to Henry and Mary Herrmann. He attended various country schools through the eighth grade while helping on the family farm. He worked for REA for about a year, which is where he got his training as a power lineman. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served one year in Korea during the Korean War, finishing out his time stateside. He was honorably discharged in October 1953.

After leaving the Army, he settled in the Mitchell area. He farmed for a while until he got a job with Northwestern Public Service Company. He married Joanne Livingston on September 3, 1955, and they had three children: Bill, Brian, and Julie. Elmer continued working for NWPS in Mitchell until he was transferred to Armour in 1977 where he was the Line Forman until he retired with 33 years of service, at age 60.

Elmer was very active in his community. He was a member of the VFW post 2750, serving as post commander at one point. He was also a member of the American Legion, served on the cemetery board for the Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery and was an honorary color guard. He was also a past member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

In his free time Elmer had many hobbies over the years. He enjoyed playing cards, camping, fishing, gardening, playing pool, and spending time with his family and friends. In his later years, he also enjoyed golfing and traveling with his special friend, Pat Brink. He especially enjoyed scratch off lottery tickets!

Elmer is survived by his sons, William Herrmann and wife, Cynthia, of Ashville, NC, and Brian Herrmann and wife, Dolly, of Sioux Falls, SD; his daughter, Julie Brown and husband, Alan, of Calera, OK; as well as eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marie Gordon of Sioux Falls, his brother Charles Herrmann and wife, Shirley, of Mitchell, along with many nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne (Livingston) Herrmann; parents, Henry and Mary Herrmann; and siblings: Donald Herrmann, Florence Reinartz, Josephine Puetz, Virginia Hall, and Jim Herrmann.

His children would like to give a special thanks to Elmer’s brother Charles and wife Shirley for everything they have done for him, the staff of Avera Brady Nursing care and Hospice services, and Dr. Margallo for their excellent care.

I'm so sorry for this loss to your family. Sending hugs and sympathy. Elmer was very hospitable to me and my children when visited on a road trip with Julie and Sydnee. I will always remember that kindness and how welcome we felt.
