Obituary

Elda Keeton, 101, of Mitchell, SD, died Monday, July 24, 2023, at her home in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 29, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Friday, July 28, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Elda Anna Keeton was born to Benjamin and Margaret E. (Mienen) Hatting on March 1, 1922. She attended St. Joseph School in Ashton, IA. Elda married Ralph Pontow on November 27, 1942. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Holy Spirit Altar Society. Following the death of Ralph in 1959, Elda married Gordon Keeton on January 21, 1975.

Elda is survived by her three children, Janet (Ed) Weber of Mitchell, Bruce (Roxanne) Pontow of Columbus, NE, and Karla (Gary) Olson of Woonsocket; two stepchildren, Richard (Betty) Keeton of Ferguson Falls, MN and Nancy Muller of Topeka, KS; and 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two sisters, Della Wesselink of Henderson, NC, and Marjorie O’Toole of Sisley, IA., and sister-in-law Bobbi Hatting of Bothel, WA.

Elda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gordon; five brothers: John Hatting, Leonard Hatting, Andrew Hatting, Clarence Hatting, and Eldon Hatting; sisters, Alma Hons and Elaine Wellendorf; four brothers-in-law: Dick Hons, Donald O’Toole, Duane Wellendorf, and Robert Wesselink; and four sisters-in-law: Ruth Hatting, MaryEllen Hatting, Donna Hatting, and Diane Hatting.

Sorry to hear about Elda’s passing. We need more Elda’s in this world. I would run into her at the grocery store and I would tease that I should walk the aisle with her and I could grab stuff off the top shelf and she could get the stuff for me from the bottom shelf. We’ll truly miss her.

Elda was our neighbor for 37 years. She was such a wonderful neighbor and friend. We had a lot of great times and a lot of laughs. She was a very spunky “ young lady” We will miss you Elda rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

A few months ago I ran into her & knowing she just had a birthday, I asked her how “young” she was. She whispered “101’ & I just renewed my driver’s license! We both cracked up laughing! ! I’ll sure miss her & her sense of humor!

Elda was the best neighbor we ever had! What an absolute delight to have had the privilege of knowing her and having her across the street for so many years. She will be greatly missed! Prayers to all of the family.

So sorry to hear this. Elda was a wonderful person and a great walking companion. We had some good visits while doing our laps at the mall. She always stopped to visit when we would run into each other since. My deepest sympathy.
