Obituary

Edward Artz, 94, of Humboldt, SD, formerly of Plankinton, SD, passed away Friday, July 26, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 6, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney, SD, with visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Edward Dale Artz was born July 8, 1930, to Albert and Marion (Roberts) Artz on the family farm in rural Plankinton, SD. Edward was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney. He attended Pleasant Lake Township School through the 8th grade, after which he began his lifelong career of farming.

In May of 1974, Edward was united in marriage to Evelyn Placek. Through this union he welcomed Melvin, Sharon, and Michael Placek into his family. Their son Christopher was welcomed into the family in 1977. Evelyn passed away in March of 1998.

Through his involvement with South Dakota Farmers Union, Edward found love again. He married Wanda Meyer in February 2005. Shortly after, he retired from farming and moved to the Meyer family farm near Humboldt, SD. Edward and Wanda took great enjoyment in designing and overseeing the construction of their new home together. They loved traveling to visit family and friends and enjoyed having visitors at their house as well. They were an inseparable couple until Wanda passed away in July 2024, just 3 weeks before Edward.

Edward was a longtime member of the South Dakota Farmers Union and the Red Angus Association of America. He also served on the St. Paul Lutheran Church council and the Pleasant Lake Township board. Nobody was a stranger to Edward; he could initiate and have a conversation with anyone. He always found the good in everyone he met.

Edward is survived by his son, Chris (Beth) Artz of Baltic; daughter, Sharon Koch (Mike Hepper) of Plankinton; daughter-in-law, Linda Rae Placek (Barry Snodgrass) of Pierre; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Mildred Niewenhuis, Barbara Wieczorek, Kenneth (Sharon) Artz, Donna (Larry) Vruegdenhil, and David Artz Sr; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his spouses, Evelyn and Wanda; sons, Melvin Placek and Michael Placek; son-in-law, Douglas Koch; sister, Caroline Domke; and brothers-in-law, Alden Niewenhuis, Benjamin Domke, and Robert Wieczorek.

Memorials will be directed to the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery of Stickney, SD, to assist with maintenance.

I definitely remember Ed when I visited my aunt & uncle in the summers. It was also nice to see him again at Mom’s land sale. Our sympathies to all of the families.

I will miss your smile and laugh Uncle Ed! I love how you called Aunt Wanda your bride! I saw the way you two would have so much fun together. You and aunt Wanda are missed.

I purchased my first Registered Red Angus cattle from Ed many years ago. He is one of the reasons I still raise those Red Angus "mama" cows today. I enjoyed visiting with him at stock shows and sales. He was such a wonderful and caring person. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
