Obituary

Edmund S. Mayer, 94, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, March 10, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell.

Edmund Stephen Mayer was born on July 19, 1931, to Peter and Clara (Ebersdorfer) Mayer in Dimock, SD. Edmund grew up on the family farm. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary, and later received his GED in Mitchell.

On May 1, 1957, Edmund married Arleen Flemmer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in Parkston before moving to Mitchell. Edmund spent much of his career as a machine operator for Ross (Abbott) Laboratories. His work took the family to Columbus, Ohio, in 1972, where they resided until his return to Mitchell in 1991.

Edmund served in the United States Army and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Moose Lodge, as well as various military organizations.

Edmund is survived by his children: Charlene Scott of Lewis Center, OH, David Mayer of Columbus, OH, Glen Mayer of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Timothy (Peggy) Mayer of Deming, NM; siblings: Daniel (Shirley) Mayer, Sister Janice “Nett” Mayer, and Florence Rokusek, along with 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arleen Mayer; son, Darrell Mayer; Peter and Clara Mayer; brothers, James, Harvey, William (Bill), Louis, and Peter; sisters, Regina (Toots) Parker, Delores Hafner, Clara (Sherri) Novachich, Adeline Heisinger, and Jean Shipman.

So sorry for your loss. I can only imagine the welcome party waiting for him. He is back with his lovely wife and all those brothers and sisters. Bless you all!

Ed was one of a kind. Always humble and kind and a man of faith.. I loved his stories of the "old" days. He will truly be missed. Gods peace to the Mayer family during this time.

Always enjoyed visiting with Ed when he would come to the JVCC. He was always so happy and friendly.
