Obituary

Earl Guymon, 91, of Mitchell, SD, died Monday, September 16, 2024, at Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center in Chamberlain, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, September 27, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Earl Allen Guymon was born January 19, 1933, to Lyle and Elna (Carlson) Guymon in Boonesville, MO. Earl graduated from Mitchell High School in 1951; graduated with BA degree from Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, in 1957; and graduated with a ME degree from Northern State College, Aberdeen, in 1969.

Earl served in the 8th Regiment of 1st Cavalry Division (US Army) in Japan from 1953-1955.

Earl was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Dahl on July 7, 1957, in Mitchell, SD.

He taught business classes at Onida High School from 1957-1960; was a Sales Representative for Mitchell Publishing Company from 1960-1968; taught Business and Distributive Education classes at Mitchell High School, and coordinated evening adult classes at Mitchell Vocational School from 1969-1979; managed Coca Cola sales and distribution warehouse in Huron, SD from 1979-1985; founded Guymon Agency with his son, Craig, in 1985, and remained a partner until retiring in 1995.

Earl was a life-time member of ELCA Lutheran Church, Sunday School teacher, and church council member. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Education Association, and Exchange Club.

Earl was an avid pheasant, duck, and deer hunter. Earl was also an avid Lake Mitchell crappie and blue gill fisherman. Earl loved teaching his grandchildren to hunt and fish. He always said, “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, or when I get this one and one more I’ll have two.” He was an avid fan of the Twins, the Vikings, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He always enjoyed a good game, or two games, of Pinochle. Most kids were playing, and playing well, by age 5, if you were around Earl for long. He loved to say, "Well we have just enough time for a quick game." Earl loved to garden, especially tomatoes and green beans. He would tirelessly defend his plot from the rabbits, and then give most of his produce away. Earl’s nieces and nephews recall the "whisker rubs", he would always give when saying "goodbyes" at family gatherings.

Earl is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons, Craig (Ronette) of Yankton, SD, Lance (Lori) of Ft. Collins, CO, Kirk (Lori) of Rapid City, SD, and Shawn (Jeannie) of New Ulm, MN; daughter, Heidi (Jeff) Brosz of Pierre, SD; eight grandchildren, Aaron Charlson, Blake Guymon, Mike Rock, Nate Guymon, Andy Guymon, Seth Guymon, Sara Guymon, and Max Brosz; two great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Cunningham (Ron) of Kenosha, WI; brother, LTC Darrell Hanson of Mitchell, SD; brother-in-law, Oscar Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Louise (Roger) Eddy; brothers-in-law, Ken Cunningham, Robert Rothlisberger, and Orland Rothlisberger; and sisters-in-law, Jo Rothlisberger and Doris Thompson.

Thank you “Grandpa Joe” for your big-hearted kindness with pats on our heads, scratches behind our ears, all the ball tosses, and the table-scrap treats. See ya again some day — on the other side. Woof!
