Obituary

Dwayne Chmela, 88, of Kimball, SD, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Aurora-Brule Nursing home in White Lake. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, April 11, at Kimball Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Red Barn Inn at rural Kimball.

Dwayne Leon Chmela was born on December 18, 1937, to Leon and Marcella (Toupal) Chmela at his family's residence south of Pukwana, SD. He attended school through the 8th grade, then worked on the family farm. In May 1956, Dwayne enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Dwayne continued farming after the military and worked for Babcock in 2002.

In September 1964, he married Claudia Haskins in Kimball, SD. They welcomed a son, Darin Wayne, in 1967.

Dwayne and Claudia lived south of Kimball, where he continued to farm. He enjoyed being outdoors, farming, and attending to his animals. He was always working on his tractors or in the shop. Dwayne was a generous, kind, and big-hearted man who will be greatly missed.

Dwayne is survived by his wife, Claudia; son, Darin (Shelly) Chmela; grandchildren, Preston (Michelle) Chmela, Angel (Cory) Stellwag, and Makayla Chmela; great-grandchildren, Jackson Chmela, Weston Chmela, Colbie Chmela, Riverlee and Gates Brunmeier, and Kayce Stellwag; along with many in-laws, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Marcella; brother, Dennis; mother and father-in-law, Alice and Willmor Haskins.
