Obituary

Duane “Ed” Cundy, 88, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, September 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Duane Edward Cundy was born in Esmond, SD, at home on March 20th, 1938, to Harold and Wanda (Plummer) Cundy.

He grew up and went to school in Esmond, South Dakota. Around the age of 16, he moved to Chicago in search of work. He joined the Army and went overseas to Germany in the early 1960s. He returned to South Dakota and started working in construction and burying cable.

Duane married Janeen Parmaley on September 4th, 1965; together they had one son, Mark.

Duane loved to find a clever way to get something done. Whether cheaper or smarter, he always had his own way of working.

In the 1970s, he established Cundy Construction, burying underground cable and rural water lines. It was during this time he met his future wife, Deb. In the 1980s, he transitioned to trucking, hauling hay, gravel, and asphalt, which he continued to do until he was 85 years old. In true trucker fashion, he enjoyed a good cup of coffee with the guys at the truck stop.

He married Deborah Anne Hatle on June 2nd, 1979, at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. Together they raised two children and spent much of their free time traveling in vehicles of all kinds. From truck campers, trailers, and motorhomes, they traveled from Florida to California, Alaska to Virginia, and almost everywhere in between.

He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he saw often and loved dearly. He particularly enjoyed watching his son play hockey and his grandkids’ powerlifting meets.

Duane is survived by his Wife, Deborah; children, Mark Cundy, Charissa (Andrew) Priebe, and Clayton (Emily) Cundy; grandchildren, Nolan, Chailyn, and Eden; step-grandson, Gavin; great-granddaughter, Isla; siblings, Darlene Cox, Diane Sawvell, Dorothy Ingemansen, Dennis (Mary) Cundy, Darwin (Sandy) Cundy; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Wanda; brothers: Deloyce (Frances) Cundy, Donald (Florence) Cundy, and Dale (Elaine) Cundy; brothers-in-law, Gene Cox, Gale Sawvell, and Melvin Ingemenasen; parents-in-law, Dennis and Carol Hatle.
