Obituary

Dorothy Schuman, 98, of White Lake, SD, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Aurora- Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 24, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in White Lake. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 PM at the Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dorothy L. Schuman was born on July 28, 1926, in Mitchell SD, to Frank and Susan Krell. She was raised and lived in White Lake all of her life except for two brief periods, one in Hurley SD after she was married, and a one-year residence in Spearfish SD from 1969 to 1970.

Dorothy attended St. Peter’s Catholic grade school in White Lake, and upon its closure, she finished her schooling at White Lake Public School, graduating in 1944. Upon her graduation, Dorothy worked at Warrell’s Drug Store.

On November 22, 1947, she married Jack Schuman at St. Peter’s Church in White Lake. During her married years, she was a stay-at-home mom raising her children from 1948 to 1986. She was hired as one of the first employees at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in 1972, beginning a 37-year career working as an aide and housekeeper. She was also one of the charter members of a social club called the Town and Country Gals. This group of White Lake moms kept the public school thriving with their 100+ children attending classes from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.

Dorothy was always ready and willing to help out her friends and neighbors whenever the need arose, and raised her nine children all the while lending a helping hand to others. She was a loyal attendee at St. Peter’s Church and a member of the Altar Society as well as Catholic Daughters. Dorothy will be remembered by all who knew her as a generous and caring person willing to do whatever she could to help.

She is survived by her children: John of White Lake, Stan (Jackie) of Tucson AZ, Mary (Bob) Reinesch of White Lake, Pat (Joyce) of White Lake, Susan (Paul) Ducklow of Silver City NM, Elizabeth Maine of White Lake, Tom (Stacy) of Mitchell, and Bob of Gainesville, VA; grandchildren: Kimberly, Jill, Taylor, Morgan, Ashley, Andy, Stephnie, and Cole; great-grandchildren: Macee, Sophie, Berkley, and Bayler; sister-in-law, Dorothy Shottenkirk; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; son, Michael; parents, Frank and Susan Krell; brother, Gerald Krell; daughter-in-law, Linda Schuman; father and mother-in-law, William and Minnie Schuman; brothers-in-law, Don, Richard, and Darell Schuman; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Schuman and Grace Garrison,; as well as all of her close friends from the Town and Country Gals club.

Those we love don’t go away…. they walk beside us every day.

Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, missed, and very dear.
