Dennis Jacob Zoss was born in Mitchell, SD to Jake and Erma (Adams) Zoss on April 28, 1949. He grew up on the family farm north of Letcher, SD. Dennis attended Logan Township School until becoming a Forestburg Buccaneer. He graduated in 1967. Dennis went on to Southern State College in Springfield, SD, graduating in 1971. While at Southern State College, he wrestled and still has the record for quickest pin for heavyweight. He was a proud Southern State College Pointer.
After college, Dennis married Paula Schmoll. To this union, three children were born: Amanda, Kimberly, and Darin. Dennis made his home on the family farm until his passing. Dennis worked in manufacturing for a major part of his life and gained numerous friends from that line of work. One of his greatest hobbies was growing produce in his garden, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and never missing an episode of Jeopardy. Dennis also enjoyed his coffee group after church on Sundays.
Dennis’s greatest joys were his grandchildren: Kennedy, Darby, Ethan, and Leah. Being “Grandpa” or “Papa Zoss” was his shining achievement. He rarely missed an event in which the grandchildren were participating – and always with a camera in hand.
Surviving Dennis are his children: Amanda (Dan) Neugebauer and their daughters Darby and Leah of Sioux Falls, SD; Kimberly Lofgren (Chad Evans) and her children Kennedy and Ethan of Mitchell, SD and Paige and Sydney Evans of Aberdeen, SD; and bonus daughter, Kelsey (Dzenan) Berberovic of Sioux Falls, SD. Dennis is also survived by his siblings: Don (Susan Hershberger) of Sunshine, AZ; Maurice (Deb) Zoss of Loomis, SD; Jackie (Al) Bowling of Anchorage, AK; and John (Donna) Zoss of Layfette, IN, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dennis is preceded in death, and once again reunited with, his son, Darin Zoss; parents, Jake and Erma Zoss; and sister, Noretta Tines.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for Dennis may be made to the Sanborn County 4-H Building Project (P.O. Box 397, Woonsocket, SD 57385) or the Downtown Mitchell First United Methodist Church (310 North Rowley Street, Mitchell, SD 57301).
