Obituary

Dennis Peters, 71, of White Lake, SD, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake, with burial to follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 11, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, including a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Arrangements are under the care of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dennis Craig Peters was born on May 8, 1953, to Alwin “Pooch” and Eleanor (Bogenhagen) Peters in Mitchell, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from White Lake High School in 1971. From an early age, Dennis had a passion for athletics and the outdoors, a love that stayed with him throughout his life.

He dedicated over 40 years to working at the White Lake Co-op, where he enjoyed providing fuel and friendly conversation to numerous farms in the White Lake area and neighboring towns.

An avid outdoorsman, Dennis took great pleasure in fall hunting. He was a skilled marksman, enjoying both local hunts and trips West River with friends for big game. Pheasant season was a special time when friends from out of state would come to join him in his passion for hunting. Dennis had a deep affection for animals, particularly dogs. His hunting trips were marked by different driving rules, including more flexible speed limits, especially when chasing coyotes.

Dennis also had a lifelong love for sports, playing various high school sports and continuing to play Town Team baseball as an adult. His enthusiasm for the game was evident, whether he was hitting a home run or sprinting around the bases. He enjoyed coaching and took pride in his winning Midget Team, which he considered to be the best group of players he had ever coached. Dennis was also a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, known for spirited debates with fans of the Vi”Queens” and Cowboys, including those within his own family.

Dennis found immense joy in spending time with his nieces and nephews. Visits from family members were always enhanced by the presence of his young relatives, and he made it a point to stay connected through “early” morning text messages and holiday gatherings.

Dennis was a loving brother, a cherished uncle, and above all, a kind and generous person. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dennis is survived by his special aunts, Darlene (Jim) Kunzweiler of Yankton, SD, and Arlene (Gary) Anderson of Couer d’Alene, ID; siblings, Vicki (Delayne) Persson of Stickney, SD, Neil Peters of White Lake, SD, Cherie Hopper of Sioux Falls, SD, Brian (Mary) Peters of Wentworth, SD, Rhonda Peters of Sioux Falls, SD, Carla (Tom) Chamberlain of Milton, GA, Renee (Dallas Schneider) of Springfield, SD, and Craig (Kellie) Peters of Sioux Falls, SD; his nieces and nephews: Karin (John) Patterson, Jon, Kirsten, and Justin (Megan) Persson, Shelly (Tommy) Schwartz, Mandy (Tom) Olson, Amber and Josh Peters, Nick and Mitchell (Amy) Chamberlain, and Ryan and Allison Peters; and 11 great nieces and nephews.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Alwin and Eleanor Peters, one brother, Gary Peters, and one brother-in-law, Dean Hopper.

I always remember seeing Dennis drive through town in the fuel truck. He would wave and say hello to everyone. Sincere condolences to all of you.

Dennis was a great guy - he always came in the cafe for lunch when I worked there and often brought me a buttered popcorn “dum dum sucker” - he will be missed.

Dennis knew more about the fuel market than anyone wearing a suit and tie and I always valued his opinion on that topic. He was always ready to visit and always had what I thought was a dry sense of humor. He will be missed. Our sympathies to the family. Dale and Lori Peters

Dennis was my first hunting partner, he taught me so much. He's the reason I'm a better shot with a rifle than my brothers! Whoever wrote the obituary nailed it when they wrote "His hunting trips were marked by different driving rules" He also made the BEST pecan pie. Love you Dennis.

While I only had the privilege to meet Dennis a few times, he seemed like a great man (despite his Packers fandom) and a truly wonderful brother and uncle. My deepest sympathy to the entire Peters’ family.

What a great fella gone too soon. Each time he came for a haircut he would always give John a bad time about how the PACKERS were better than the VIKES!!
