Dean Deinert, 66, of Mt. Vernon, SD, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Mitchell, SD. A celebration of his life will be Sunday, August 30th, from 1-3:00 PM at Mt. Vernon’s Tom Young Community Center, with a 1:30 PM time of sharing. Private burial will be at a later date in Emsley Cemetery in Ethan, SD.  Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dean Oscar Deinert was born on February 22, 1960, in Parkston, South Dakota, to Herman and Ruth (Schoenfelder) Deinert. He was the fourth of seven sons and was raised in the Mt. Vernon community, where he attended all twelve years of school and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1978.

Mt. Vernon was more than simply the place Dean lived; it was home. It was where he grew up, raised his family, built friendships, worked, laughed, and became a familiar and much-loved part of the community.

On October 29, 1999, Dean married the love of his life, Donna. Through their marriage, Dean became part of a family that quickly became his own. Donna’s youngest son, David, legally adopted Dean as his father, a reflection of the special bond the two shared.

Dean was a hard-working man who took great pride in providing for his family. He spent 38 years as an over-the-road truck driver, working for Fousek Trucking, Lloyd Bultsma Trucking, and others throughout his long career. In 2017, he began working at the Mt. Vernon Farmers Elevator, where he continued to work until his passing. He had planned to retire on November 1 of this year. Never one to sit still for long, Dean had also recently begun working as a school bus driver at the beginning of the school year.

While Dean was proud of his work, his greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was the best “PaPa” to Jayden, Gavin, Brooklyn, Bridger, Ella, Preston, and Jennie. The memories he created with each of them are priceless and will be treasured for generations. Whether he was teasing them, spending time with them, making them laugh, or simply being there, Dean gave his grandchildren something that cannot be replaced: the memory of a grandfather who loved them completely.

Dean was a dad to Amber and David and a stepdad to Tom and Sara. He loved his family deeply and was always ready to lend a hand, share a story, or offer his unmistakable sense of humor.

Those who knew Dean will remember his quick wit and his ability to find humor in just about anything. He had a special talent for pointing out the obvious to anyone who left themselves open to it, and he usually did so with perfect timing. His humor could turn an ordinary moment into a memory, and his laughter and personality made him someone people enjoyed being around.

Dean was one of those people who seemed to know everyone and was known by nearly everyone. His roots ran deep in Mt. Vernon, and his presence could be felt throughout the community. His unexpected passing leaves a massive hole not only in the hearts of his family, but throughout the community he called home for his entire life. There will be empty places where Dean used to stand, quiet moments where his voice and laughter should be, and countless people who will think, “Dean would have had something to say about this.”

Dean was preceded in death by his father, Herman Deinert.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Donna; son, David (Jessica); daughter, Amber Goetsch (Tyler); step-son, Thomas Pischke (Lisa); step-daughter, Sara Munneke (Mitch); mother, Ruth; brothers, Marvin, Rodney (Mardi), Eugene, Lynn (Rhonda), Terry (Darcy), and Mark (JoEllen), along with many nieces and nephews.

Most of all, Dean will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor, and familiar face who made Mt. Vernon feel a little more like home.

His life was filled with hard work, family, friendship, laughter, and love. His time with us was far too short, but the memories he leaves behind are immeasurable.

And while the hole Dean leaves behind is enormous, so too is the legacy of love and laughter he leaves in the hearts of all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and never forgotten.
